Rising Stars: Meet Billie Stock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Billie Stock.

Hi Billie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi there, I’m Billie! I have an ever-growing passion for photography + I am a body-positive advocate for women!

As a young girl through my early teens, I was bullied for my name + my size. I honestly never knew what confidence was or that it even existed until my early 20’s. I began following body-positive influencers on social media + loved the positivity they were extending to everyone, no matter their shape or size. I stumbled upon a boudoir community + instantly fell. in. love. I felt like I was truly with my people. My life-long passion for photography was finally able to do something good for others while creating beautiful artwork at the same time. I imagined how I could change women’s lives for the better how I knew just how… through intimate portraiture : Boudoir. Extending my hand, I would show women that they had someone on their team. In the end, my main goal was to show Women how to love themselves how they are in this moment without the weight of the mainstream media on their shoulders anymore.

In 2015, I was riddled with credit card debt + honestly didn’t have a great job or support system at the time. My days were spent daydreaming of being a Boudoir photographer, but I had extremely limited resources, so I kept putting it off + stifling myself. One day after talking to one of my best friends, Marisa, I decided I had waited long enough! I put my big girl pants on, put my anxiety aside + started my studio in my bedroom of a house I was renting. I didn’t think anything of it, I was trying not to have any expectations honestly. But, to my surprise, the business absolutely exploded overnight! I was booking sessions consistently + got to a point where I knew I wanted to keep growing my community to better the experience for my clients. Women were showing me that they NEEDED this. I was right where I was supposed to be. So, I worked every day, pouring my blood, sweat + tears into reality while improving my artistry for them to reap the benefits in all the ways!

I’m the kind of person that loves to grow + I am forever wanting to be a better version of myself personally, as well as an entrepreneur/businesswoman. I may have doubts, but I don’t let them sit in my heart for too long. I’ve pushed through the heaviest, darkest doors that were once holding me back, including myself, to reach for my wildest dreams + change women’s lives.

After shooting out of my home studio for so many years, I finally set my anxieties aside, dedicated myself, my time + resources into my very first store-front studio! I had no idea if I would “make it” or not, but I didn’t let these doubts stop me from trying. This was what my heart wanted for years + my amazing BXB community absolutely LOVED it too! My girls celebrated right alongside me + I am SO honored to have such an amazing group of women supporting me back! Our business has grown easily twice its size + continues to do so, which is truly just an honor. That’s what I love about Boudoir – we are a team that’s seamlessly unstoppable + we band together with this radiating force that others cannot help but notice and be a part of.

For me, it’s not just about booking clients or making money. It’s about creating a community where women are allowed to be who they are + feel beautiful in their own skin. Some of my dearest friends I’ve even met through my business, which is just a bonus!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business + keeping it afloat takes more dedication + perseverance than I ever thought it would. I’ve had my own challenges with depression, anxiety and fear of failure as well. Pushing this aside isn’t always the easiest thing to do when you experience it deeply every day. But since my early 20’s, although typically introverted, I have been a natural leader + knew that I had to work hard for what I wanted in life. I yearned to do something that would make the world a better place, especially for women. Being a business owner is hard enough but adding BOUDOIR to the mix made things a little bit sticky for me in the beginning.

When I told people what I wanted to do, I got lots of side-eye looks + low whispers. This is the mid-west… people aren’t used to this “sort of thing.” I heard all of the time. Self expression + women’s sexuality is often looked down upon + there’s a HUGE stigma around Boudoir. People may think I shoot “pornography” + when I tell people what I do, they often have no idea why I would “photograph naked women” for a profession or how that’s even professional at all. I had a lot of people doubt me, which in turn, some days made me doubt myself, but I pushed through that negative energy. I couldn’t be more proud of the community that’s been created within my business with the help of all our girls.

My main goal as a woman + photographer, is to EDUCATE as many people as I can about what Boudoir actually is… An empowering intimate photographic experience for all shapes + sizes. We are an empathetic community that extends a hand to those who may not have a team behind them. We reach out to those who may not know what self-love is or that it even exists, just like me when I was younger. Teaching women that this self-love + acceptance is possible RIGHT NOW, is the greatest thing I’ve ever been a part of. Watching my clients blossom into the woman they truly are makes my heart so happy.

I am here to offer education + support whether someone else may understand WHY I do what I do or not. I push through the stigma + boundaries every day as a woman/boudoir business… I don’t intend to let anyone, or anything stop me now!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a plus sized, professional Boudoir-grapher! I’m here to re-write the universal standard “image of beauty” + show value to each woman who comes into my life + studio. In my photography studio, we’re known for our detail to size-inclusivity, meaning we don’t leave ANYONE behind, regardless of their shape or size. Bringing women together as a whole + creating a supporting community is something we hold near + dear to our hearts. Women don’t always have a voice + we’re here to SCREAM for everyone we can. One of our main goals is to get rid of the bubble around having to be a certain size or shape to have beauty + that it’s even okay to feel sexy in your own skin in this moment.
I often have clients, or even by-standers, comment on the beauty + emotion that they FEEL through viewing my imagery. We love capturing a story rather than an image. You can feel the strength these women have while looking at their galleries. You can sense the pain, struggle + determination they’ve had in their life up until this point + are able to celebrate that journey with them. You can watch them bloom from being nervous, self-conscious to a woman who KNOWS she has value the now.

Our favorite photographic style, which is what we’re well known for, is to capture our clients is with a dark + moody style. I find myself focusing on the woman’s silhouette + more intricate details, like their freckles, the way their hair falls, their smile + curves. We use highlights from the natural light in our studio that tells us a unique story about their feminine form as it wraps around their being.

A huge reason why our clients choose us over another studio is the fact that we are also EDUCATORS. The women that come to us are not models. They love that we take the time to show them the pose, help them get into the pose + make it absolutely perfect by moving their stray hairs hair, make outfit adjustments or even guide their arms or legs where is needed! We explain every detail needed from them down to even what to do with your lips during a shoot! This is SO important + we have women travel from different states to Experience our Boudoir sessions!

Creating a community is what is most important to us. We treat our clients like we treat our friends, with love + compassion. They know that we’re there for them, whether they need a shoulder to cry on when they’re down or feel like a bad ass through their portrait session in our studio. We’re not just a business, we’re a community + we WILL support you always wether you book a session or not!
