Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Viamontes.
Hi Crystal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
The concept for Mama C’s started about 5 years ago. I was preparing a new recipe that required Jalapeño Jelly so I ran out to the store to pick some up. The jelly available in the grocery stores looked like a science experiment out of a lab and was full of artificial flavor and color. That is when I decided to make it myself with the fresh jalapeños from my garden. It turned out so good that all our friends wanted a jar too! Since then, I have expanded my line of products to include multiple flavors of jams and jellies, apple butter, and pickled goods. In 2020 I decided to try and sell my items at a local farmers market and they were a hit! I am now trying to expand my business and hope to one day do this full-time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is ever smooth when you start up a business and there were/are some struggles. I am building my business up while working full time and helping my husband at his art shows. Currently, I am limited on space for making and storing my products, but we are looking for land so I can grow all my own fruits and vegetables as well as install a commercial kitchen on the property. My dream is to be truly farm-to-table with my products and be able to travel the country with my husband selling our items.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my day job, I am currently employed as a project coordinator and handle all the accounting for my projects.
Mama C’s specializes in delicious jams, jellies, and pickled items that are free of artificial colors and flavors. I currently source all my fruits locally and grow my own jalapeños. I am proud to be able to support our local community while providing high-quality products.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Determination, high standards, and hard work
