Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Preston.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Show Me Care Bags provides Care Bags to those receiving cancer treatment at no cost to the patient. I have lost family members to cancer, including my stepfather, who battled for seven years. Cancer treatment can be lonely and scary (even the thought that you may have cancer can be scary). I want to be able to provide small and helpful items to patients so that they know that they aren’t alone even while fighting for their lives. I have worked in the medical field since I was 18 and had a wonderful family who supports me and Show Me Care Bags.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
By far, Covid-19 was a very large obstacle for our mission – we were getting some really good footing when the pandemic hit and have now had to take many steps backward (moving the entire operation back to my home). We previously had a storefront where volunteers could come in and help assemble the Care Bags. Donations suffered with Covid, as well as our fundraising events. We continue to increase our efforts to get back on our feet and deliver Care Bags (this is a slow process.)
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We deliver Care Bags to a local hospital in the St. Louis area and Southeast Missouri for cancer patients receiving treatment. When funds are available, we ship care bags to patients who have requested them online.
What are your plans for the future?
We hope to increase our donations and apply for grants that will help us be financially stable and continue to bring Show Me Care Bags to cancer patients.
