Rising Stars: Meet Keni Walker of Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keni Walker.

Hi Keni, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When the summer of 2020 ended, it dawned on me how difficult it had been for me to find one-of-a-kind pieces at the goodwill that fit my body type. I decided to create my Etsy account then and shop around at my favorite local thrift/resale shops to discover pieces in various sizes. Within the journey of DUB, I discovered my audience, did a couple of pop-ups, and became a creative director + more for my business.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No way! It has been the most challenging thing I’ve done for myself. I didn’t know about a “one-woman show” until I did everything from sourcing products to model calls to setting up shoots and being the photographer, editor, content creator, and creative strategist. It challenged my mind, and I even went through an identity crisis, but I never gave up on DUB Select because I knew it was something special, something different & new.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I do as a “9-5” is outreach. I work for the St. Patrick Center, a local non-profit, helping assist the unhoused and their chronic needs. My specialty, though, is discovering the “who’s who” that makes up St. Louis’ creative culture. I’m such a people person and love discovery. I believe I’m known for my bubbly personality and strong opinion. I’m most proud of my growth as an adult. I never saw myself past 21 for some odd reason. My boldness, sensitivity, and zero tolerance for disrespect are set apart.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting?
I wish I knew where to look and how to build a team. I still would like to know. I’m learning so much still because DUB isn’t on the steady, consistent ground just yet. I will say that social media is your friend, not your enemy. Focus on what works and not what isn’t. Also, you must believe in what you’re doing more than those around you.
