Rising Stars: Meet LaDonna Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaDonna Baker.

LaDonna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Self Care Naturals was birthed from my passion to help others. Prior to launching my skincare line, I owned a permanent makeup company and was often gratified by the reaction of happy customers. However, a car accident limited my capacity and forced me to close the doors temporarily. Nevertheless, my passion for beauty and flawless skin fueled me to conduct tons of research that lead me to creating a skincare brand that helps find effective skincare products that do not contain chemicals. My passion for people and helping in some way shape or formed helped me align my purpose for creating such a brand. Within two weeks of its official launch, Self Care Naturals sold out of most products. Manifesting and believing in my work is what allowed me to launch a successful business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, but nothing worth having will ever be easy. Some struggles were formulating products and testing them but they didn’t work. Or making products in a large batch and it not turning out correctly so you have to throw it all out. The cost of inventory is high it feels like you’ve wasted so much money. Inventory was another obstacle, I couldn’t find packaging because of the pandemic and it caused me to have to postpone restock. So being patient was hard. It’s also difficult when you don’t know if you’ll reach people and or if people will support you on something you’ve worked so hard on. Going through the motions of building on your own, no mentor, no investors, nothing can definitely be challenging as well. But the biggest obstacle yet was losing my father right after my first launch. Heartbroken is an understatement. I had to postpone and stop everything because I lost the ability to move forward because I felt like I had lost everything when I lost him. So when life happens, it can seem like giving up is way easier, but gaining the strength and courage to move on even during your roughest storm is the biggest struggle I’ve experienced. It’s hard getting back up after that, but you have to because you worked so hard and I know he wouldn’t want it any other way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own an all-natural skincare line that helps people who suffer from skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and even those who struggle with acne. All products I make are natural and have a purpose. I am known for my ability to create things and be successful in everything I touch, I have always been considered gifted in so many aspects. I am most proud of the fact that my children are able to see me create a platform and generational wealth in entrepreneurship off of things I actually believe in. Being able to show them that anything is possible if you work for it and believe in what you do is so rewarding. They see the many struggles but they watch me overcome them effortlessly, so it shows them to never give up and that makes me proud to know they have a role model in their life they can look up to. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I went into this business with the intent to actually make a change and difference, it wasn’t and is not about the money. I genuinely care about the people I reach and will reach. I chose Self Care as my business name because I want a message to be sent within my products. I want people to understand the importance of self-care and to understand that self-care should be intentional but too many of us pour into others and neglect our own needs forgetting that we are our best when we take care of ourselves. I want my customers to appreciate the value of self-care and feel good inside and out every time they use my products.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when my father would take us to see airplanes. Back in the day, people were allowed to park their cars on a lot to plane watch, I know it sounds crazy! But I would always look forward to us parking and him making a pallet on the hood of the car for us to lay on. We would lay on our back and look up in the air with our snacks and watch the planes. When you are young, it seems like the most coolest thing to see! It was always the smallest things that made me happy. My dad was such an amazing father.
