Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Arnotti.
Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began developing the concept for Island Life about five years ago. I have always worked in the fitness industry in big box gyms and felt that often the gym experience was a negative one for women. They felt self-conscious and often didn’t enjoy the process, only the end result. That’s when the idea for my business came to me. I wanted to create a beautiful space where people of all sizes, genders, and ages would feel comfortable and learn to truly enjoy the process of getting more fit and healthy. I opened as a yoga studio and as I got the hang of ownership have been steadily adding more services. About one year in, I added personal training and shortly thereafter got certified as a Pilates instructor and added that to my schedule as well. Now we are a boutique fitness experience with a wide variety of class offerings, ranging from incredibly gentle restorative yoga all the way up to high-intensity fitness boot camps. I get to help make people’s lives happier every day and it’s the best thing ever!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Most definitely not a smooth road! We were still in our infancy when the pandemic hit and we were forced to shut down for three months (but still pay all the bills) and since then have had class size restrictions that have been very challenging. On top of that owning a small business is just a steep learning curve! It has been super important for my business to adapt- 6 am classes don’t work- try 7 am! Constantly evaluating what is working and what isn’t, and then pivoting based on that information. Honestly, I just keep throwing things out there and seeing what sticks. What does not work gets tossed and what does continues to evolve.
Opening this business is the most challenging thing I have ever done by a long shot, but also the most rewarding.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a business owner, personal trainer, yoga instructor, and Pilates instructor. I managed large teams of personal trainers in my previous career and taught them how to be trainers, how to give impeccable customer service, how to be comfortable with sales, and how to achieve great results for their clients.
I think that background and all of my certifications set me apart. Besides those main certifications, I have about 20 secondary certifications, so I really have never stopped learning. My training background makes me much more successful as a Yoga & Pilates instructor because I already have a very good understanding of anatomy and how our bodies work.
I am most proud that I had an idea that I believed in and created something out of nothing- now I have a beautiful business and a full schedule of classes and happy clients.
What were you like growing up?
I have always been a people person, for sure. Very outgoing and personable, good at helping people feel comfortable and very energetic. Looking back, I realize that I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit- I taught myself to sew at a young age and used to make couches for my dolls and try to barter them to my friends and family. I was always crafty and would figure out ways to monetize that throughout my whole life. This business is the last in the line of finding a hobby I love and finding a way to share that with others.
And I have always loved animals, cats, dogs, hamsters, I love em all! Also, nature! I have always loved to grow things and spend as much time as I can outside. Music has always been a huge influence for me also. It’s the touchstone thing through my life that grounds me.
