Rising Stars: Meet S3an Alexander

Today we’d like to introduce you to S3an Alexander.

Hi S3an, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
brllantmnds (@brllantmnds) is a clothing brand out of St. Louis, USA ran by Artist, Designer, & Creative Director S3an Alexander (@bmS3an). brllantmnds is a celebration of all things creative. This is why you see such high color in the designs and logos, so it provides the same feeling you get from party balloons or confetti. brllantmnds is the high school letterman jacket or the championship trophy I never had growing up. Every pieces feels like a win, every piece feels like an irreplaceable moment in time for me. This year is actually the 4th year for the brand since its first drop in 2017.

I started out being solely a visual artist painting acrylic on canvas. The brand started off as artist merch for me where I basically was just taking parts of my paintings and placing them on garments. I wanted to have something more tangible I could sell at art events that people would be able to buy without much thought versus people having to come prepared to buy high priced art work. Most people do prints I wanted to do clothes something you could wear daily and live with. brllantmnds evolved from there I started to care more and more about the quality of the garment, the presentation of it. that’s where look books and commercials came into play something to connect my consumer to my work visually.

Instead of just posting a picture of a t-shirt saying hey buy this. That is important to me when it comes to my brand and my work. I want you to feel invested in every purchase like people do artwork. That’s why mostly everything is one and done. We don’t do many restocks and things of that nature because I want you to feel like you had to be there.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Staying out my own head is where I struggle most with designing. Trying not to overthink my process. Trusting my process is where I tend tho thrive most. You also deal with the constant self doubt or second guessing things as a creative. That comes from truly wanting to be the best at your craft. That would probably be where I would say my struggles come from.

Finding new resources in a city that isn’t necessarily made for art and fashion so sometimes things are hard to navigate not everything is laid out for you. So being resilient is something that has to happen in this space. I will say I am fortunate to have found the creative community within my city that has definitely made things significantly easier for me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Artist, Designer and Creative Director for my brand. I’m known for my bold use of color in my art and my use of balloons and flowers. Also known for my attention to detail and how everything I do is well thought out from top to bottom, consistently. I’m most proud of that and the fact I never give up although somethings in this industry get annoying at times knowing when to take a breather or step away and take the time to readjust. I feel like my attention to detail is also what sets me apart my ability to take things from start to finish from illustrator to the final product while also being able to creative direct my look books and commercials that match.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would start w/ Cameron Williams he taught me illustrator and helped me get out the first initial ideas of brllantmnds. Rell Brodie and Jessica J. Page they put me in my very first art show that started my journey and put me in position to be here. Jessica was also my sole photographer for my first year of my brand so she was always a big help there.

Ashlee Nicole always helps me think outside the box and challenge myself branding and marketing wise. Sienote helped me put together my first solo art shows that help separate me from the crowd a bit. I feel that Saint Louis’ art community all together has helped me tremendously, we would be here all day naming everyone. There’s people that play very small parts and some that play larger parts but everyone plays a part and that’s what matters.
