Rising Stars: Meet Sydnie Russian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydnie Russian.

Hi Sydnie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating college, I went into the Peace Corps in North Macedonia and everyone said to bring a hobby, so I decided to learn how to do brush lettering to add to the bullet journaling of my time abroad. Over the next year and a half, I got really into lettering and calligraphy, taking classes online and thinking about how I would turn it into a business when I got back to America.

I got evacuated back to America in March 2020 due to the pandemic and took my time to resettle into American life. In October of 2020, I started my calligraphy business! Minerva’s Mark is my love for literature, writing, and taking the time to slow down in these days of small attention spans.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a small business at any time is no small endeavor, but the pandemic has definitely added its own difficulties. From supply chain shortages to weddings being canceled or delayed, there’s been a lot of barriers to getting into the event industry. I require masks in my workshops for everyone’s safety even though I and most of my students are vaccinated, but I’m sure there are plenty who don’t sign up because of the pandemic right now.

It’s also been a struggle for me because I am a blend of both services and products. Finding resources for a small, creative business that fit my exact niche has been difficult, but slowly I am finding my space and my people.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I especially love to write in the vintage styles of art nouveau and art deco from the turn of the century and gothic styles from long before that! I have a variety of scripts that I can use to write on event invites, signs, personalized stationery, and more! I offer workshops for learning brush lettering and I’m developing a workshop series for learning dip pen, which I what I use for most of my work. I also offer a variety of wax seals to embellish your stationery or journals to give it a special old-world feel!

I love astrology and I’ve developed a set of stationery based on each zodiac sign! Each ten-card set is marbled by hand with three colors that invoke that sign and includes 10 peel-n-seal wax seals with the zodiac symbol. It makes a great birthday gift for people who are hard to gift!

While I love writing on paper, I can also write on a variety of other surfaces- glass, acrylic, or even leather! If you have a jacket that needs to be customized, I am your gal!

From small business needs to extravagant weddings, I’d love to help elevate your event or location with custom lettering!
