Rising Stars: Meet Zoe Cangas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Cangas.

Zoe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Zoe Cangas (Zo Kong-Gus). I am a wife, a mother, and a full-time Real Estate agent. My life, as it usually is for most humans, has been a series of highs and lows. Some simultaneous. Most unanticipated. As if a route on a roller coaster ride, I coasted until the first day of my senior year of high school, when my roller coaster plummeted as I gave birth to my daughter, Alexis. I then held on tight for all of the loops and turns as I completed my senior year, got through college, moved to St Louis and bought my first house. Up and down and in and out I went. I then soared to the top when I met my husband, then climbed higher as we had our two children together and I switched careers and started part-time in real estate. It was a few years later, when my family tragically suffered the loss of my 15-year-old niece to suicide when my roller coaster derailed and I began plummeting.

I closed my eyes and held on, waiting for an impact that never came. When I could finally open my eyes and look around, I found that a safety net had embraced me and prevented my demise. I had God, a supportive family, and a career that had flourished during my darkest times. After this tragedy, to get through, I worked harder than ever. Working distracted me and gave me purpose. Now, on the other side of that tragedy, my work provides me with joy and fulfillment I didn’t know existed. I have grown my real estate business into a successful career that I never knew was possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Being a single mother for ten years, from the age of 17, presented a lot of struggles. None were too great to overcome, though. And honestly, each obstacle taught me to buckle down and persevere with a persistence and tenacity I wouldn’t have found otherwise. I always somehow managed to get through any hardship abundantly. Also, after the death of my niece, I found myself in a mental struggle I’d never endured before. But again, with faith and determination, I have found myself working through that grief with grace and grit.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Realtor in the St. Louis area. I specialize in relocating people into and out of St Louis. Specifically, I work with medical families relocating for work and training. My husband is a physician and I help him run his two medical practices. This knowledge and experience is what helped me find this niche within real estate.

Whether they are moving here for residency or if they are practicing attendings that have been hired on by one of our major hospital systems, the schedule of a physician is hectic and sporadic. Also, the needs of physicians based on their specialty play a role in what kind of home they are looking for and where.

The majority of these physician clients are from out of state and don’t have time to come to STL to look at houses. I am providing video tours and as much information as possible to them about the neighborhood and houses they ‘see’ so they can comfortably purchase a home sight unseen. It is extremely common for my clients to never step foot in their home until AFTER they’ve purchased it!

My favorite part of this experience is watching them walk into their home for the first time. I am always so confident they’ll love it, and so far, I haven’t been wrong!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My client’s happiness is what matters most to me. I love St. Louis. I love all of the neighborhoods in St. Louis. I love all of the different styles of homes within these neighborhoods.

Each client has different wants and needs, and finding exactly what they want in a neighborhood they will love brings me so much joy. And especially for my relocating physicians who know absolutely nothing about St. Louis, I love helping them get connected to their new city.
