Today we’d like to introduce you to Derlene Hirtz
Hi Derlene, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up as a military child and ended up in St Louis when my father retired. I lived a pretty protected and fixed mindset life. I went to college very late, having been brought up to believe college was only for the rich. I married at 19 (yep, still married), went to school for education, taught school, and became a director within the Catholic system. (Did I say protected life?)
I eventually found myself in a toxic work environment and had no tools to get myself out of it. In addition, my son was in special forces and was in Afghanistan on the front line. A LOT of fear that was completely foreign to me. As a last ditch effort, I called a coach out in CA and she ended up helping me pull myself out of a very dark place. I eventually started taking vacation and traveling to California to study NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming – and found myself in a completely new transformative place. This was all so new – the possibilities, the growth mindset, the tools to communicate with myself and others, I could go on! I decided to become a coach, having no idea that “everyone” is a coach. I bought a referral marketing franchise and held the license for five years before releasing the franchise to grow You Empowered Services. I partnered with my trainer and together we train and certify NLP here in St. Louis. I have written chapters in three international best sellers, achieved NLP Trainer status, and have three keynotes that I deliver: Ignite Your Mindset, Becoming the Woman in the Mirror, and the Lie in Belief. I work daily to step further and further away from the part of our ego that is self-serving and sabotaging. All of this is super cool, however, the best part of who I am is Gigi – to my grandkids. I want to model for them how important it is to work everyday to become a better human and step into our greatest self.
I have built You Empowered Services from the ground up without a clue (thank you coaches) as to what I was doing. At 55, I stepped in the world of entrepreneurship and have had all the “experiences.” At least I think I have, that remains to be seen! Previously in the past, I only knew how to work a job. It has taken a lot of borrowed confidence for me to arrive at this moment.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I struggled with confidence, imposter syndrome, fear of failure/success and so many limitations in my belief system. I made $250K within the first couple of years, only to pretty my invest it back in myself because I felt like I wasn’t “good enough.” to have success. I had so much self-doubt and yet, I am built on resilience – that’s the lesson I have learned. Quitting is an option and I would never choose it.
Training with the woman who trained me, side by side, has offered an immense amount of comparing myself to her and having crazy expectations of myself. It is my greatest lesson – coming to know and trust my truest self and that I am enough and maybe even more 🙂
I 100% believe getting comfortable being uncomfortable is the number one rule in being a business owner.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about You Empowered Services, LLC?
In 2016, I created my business to help others step into their next version of their best self so their business is more successful. I focus on helping entrepreneurs, business owners, and sales people overcome the limitations, obstacles, and anxiety that is holding them back from reaching their goals so they can become more profitable, purposeful, and productive. I was 52 years old and had zero business experience. I was in a toxic work environment that was taking a huge toll on my personal life, self-esteem, and self-worth. On the advice of a friend, I hired a mindset/business coach and created You Empowered Services. Initially, I wanted to help others get happier in life. I soon discovered that I love hanging out with entrepreneurs and shifted to using my business success to helping business owners reach their success. My business includes an NLP training and certification program, business growth coach, and a mastermind mentor. I also focus my time on professional speaking and am an author of several international best selling compilations. It is an incredible, fulfilling life!
I am known for my NLP training and certification program. We train the entire NLP program. I love to be a witness to the personal transformations that take place inside the classroom and then graduate the students to go off and help others in their chosen fields using the tools of NLP. So cool.
I am most proud of being a role model to my granddaughters so they can pursue their dreams when they grow up.
What sets me apart from others is my transparency, authenticity, and one hundred percent walk the walk. I practice what I teach. I continually invest in myself , am a life-long learning, especially in the science of the mind, success, and excellence. What makes me different is that I know I am not different from anyone, I make different choices and that makes for a different life.
As for my brand offerings, I offer a Success Bootcamp five times a year: NLP Practitioner, Master Practitioner, Timeline Therapy, Master Timeline Therapy, and Trainers Training. The results include: doubling business income, starting new revenue streams, overall more business success and life satisfaction.
As for coaching, it is referral-based only. Clients normally come to me when they are focused on growing their business and want more success or they are hitting a ceiling and cannot seem to breakthrough to the next level. Mastermind mentoring includes small intimate groups of masterminding, sometimes gender separate depending on the intention of the mastermind, and finally short, six week courses including: Fresh start mindset (January), staying in the game during summer (April), mid-year reset, (July) and Goal setting for the following year (October).
I also am a big fan of networking, building relationships, and making connections to help others grow their business, referring business, and growing my own business.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in a military setting, my father is a retired Air Force veteran. We moved every two years or so through my 8th grade year. I was an obedient child as my father had an authoritative parenting style that many times frightened me. I was quiet, afraid to raise my hand in school for fear I would be made fun of if I was wrong. I had little confidence and took great measures to not show it to others, mostly by keeping quiet, especially in school.
I was always a happy child overall. I loved riding bikes, skating, and playing outside. We felt very safe on the military bases and had a lot of freedom to roam. I was in band, played the clarinet and saxophone through my junior year in high school. I was drum major my junior year. My sport in high school was volleyball.
