Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Maness
Hi Jake, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started out as a laborer for a general construction crew. I was in my early twenties and was focused on my music career more than anything else. I was doing a lot of traveling with my brother and bandmate, David, as The Maness Brothers. Construction work came out of the necessity to make ends meet. Eventually the contractor I had been working for retired. This was when I decided to start my own LLC and focus on house painting. I worked under the company name Work Dawg for years, I was still painting part-time and spending the other half of my time working as a musician. It wasn’t until 2020, when Covid-19 appeared, that I started taking my business to the next level. With the inability to travel and perform with a band during that time, I decided to focus on growing my painting business. Since then I’ve grown immensely year after year. In 2024 I rebranded from Work Dawg to Maness Painting and at this point Maness Painting is my full-time job, but you can still catch The Maness Brothers and my other bands on stage here and there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, the biggest struggle with starting a business from the ground up has been the learning curve on things such as how to prepare a bid, price out a job, etc. There are also many things in trade work that you can only get from experience. I didn’t have any experienced painters to apprentice under or a clear path. I had to jump in with both feet and make my way. I learned a lot of lessons doing it that way, though, and there’s always plenty more to learn in this line of work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I offer interior and exterior painting and I also do staining/sealing and refinishing work, for both residential and commercial properties. This could be one room or your whole house, inside and out, or power washing, staining, or sealing your fence, deck, or carport. My line of work often includes minor drywall repair and carpentry work. I became part of the community here in South St. Louis though music so many of my clients are people I met though that. I’ve built a reputation of being someone you can trust in your house and who will handle your job with care.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Keeping a good relationship up with my clients matters most to me. In this business most of my work comes through word-of-mouth recommendations. My clients can trust that I’ll take care of their job and that takes a lot of the stress off of their shoulders. Because of this, my clients are eager to highly recommend me to their friends and family. I put a lot of care into what I do and am very personable with my clients. When you call Maness Painting you get me on the phone. I’m a one-man crew (for now) and while it takes a lot of work, I pride myself on being honest and keeping my clients happy.
