Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Robinson
Hi Jocelyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
J’s Mississippi Kitchen manifested organically while I was trying to get through the grief of losing my husband. He and I often had family and friends over for the holidays, or just for any reason, really. I marinated the meat and did all of the sides and desserts. He was always on the grill.
Jesse—my husband—and I were together for 16 years. He passed suddenly. When he died I found myself looking to fill the time with hobbies I loved to do, this is where cooking plates and baking cakes came in to the story!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I’ve been on auto-pilot. I can say the road has been long. Whatever bumps I’ve experienced along the way have been weathered and kept moving. I try to always move forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Professionally, I’ve worked different jobs in different industries. Currently, I work full time as a government employee and in my spare time I get the pleasure of catering with J’s Mississippi Kitchen.
As a caterer, a few things set me apart. First, I only source my fish and breading from the Mississippi Delta. My recipes are longtime family recipes from my relatives in Mississippi.
Second, I maintain consistency. Whether it’s fried catfish, green beans, poundcake, or even fresh juices, I pride myself on not cutting corners and making sure every dish is flavorful and memorable.
Third, I pay attention to presentation and the customer experience. Whether you are getting a Sunday Plate or are one of the guests of an event I’m catering I do my best to create a memorable plate of food. I’m proud of my cooking and want people to know I put a piece of my heart into every dish.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Consistency, kindness, professionalism. Also, integrity. If I say my catfish is sourced from Mississippi, you can rest assured, I’m not stocking up at the local St Louis supermarket.
I also pride myself on being integrated within the community. No matter the event I do my best to get out and listen to our customers – whether they want to give feedback to me personally or just to tell me about their day I try to be a sounding board for anyone who may need it. I feel this gives J’s Mississippi Kitchen a personal touch that you won’t receive from many large companies.
