Life & Work with Cathy Davis of Metro St Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Davis

Hi Cathy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Davis Creative, LLC began as a branding services agency in January 2004, after Cathy Davis had been downsized from a Global Financial Institution, where she was Creative Director for the Trust Division. Her husband, Jack Davis, joined her in 2008 after being downsized from a 20-year career with Fleishmann-Hillard, a Global Public Relations firm with offices in St. Louis.

It was around that time when Cathy was able to mentor with a Publishing Exec in Los Angeles who taught her the ins and outs of the ever-growing Independent Publishing world. Fast-forward, and they now have a solid team of 5+ that work full-time on writing, editing, designing, and publishing books, plus another 15-20 freelancers. To date, they have produced over 600+ individually-authored books and 30+ collaborative collections of essays, all adding up to over 1700 authors. They have authors in all 50 states and at least seven foreign countries.

What sets them apart from most Publishing Consultants is that they teach their clients to be Author-As-Publisher in order to Minimize Their Investment, Maximize Their Compensation, Retain 100% of Their Profits, Maintain 100% of Their Copyright, and Access Global Distribution. As Ghost Publishers, Cathy and her team do all the work, and their clients get all the accolades

An integral part of their Team is their Chief Barketing Director, Chewy. A rescue Poodle Mix, now six years old, he is constantly rotating between both Cathy’s and Jack’s office while standing guard on the back of a sofa to scare off all squirrels and mail carriers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our business has survived what started with two downsizings followed by the global financial crises of 2008 – 2009, Jack’s cancer diagnosis and recovery in 2011-2013, a rebranding to a focus on publishing in 2016, the virus pandemic of 2020, and the ongoing, ever-changing digital world of printing and publishing. We celebrated our 20th year in 2024, which already looks like it will be our biggest sales year to-date.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We help people use their Voice for Good — we all have wisdom to share, and wisdom not shared is lost forever. We have all landed on this planet at this time in space for a particular reason — our mission — and its our job to help share our messages and heal the planet. Lofty dreams? Perhaps. But the world needs to hear our healing voices and positive words in order to override the anger and hate which seems to be shouting a bit too loud as of late. We believe itis time to Stand Up, Speak Up, and Lift Up — and create a positive ripple in this world with our words.

What were you like growing up?
As the youngest of three children, with my brother and sister 10 and 12 years older, it was like having an extra set of parents growing up. My mother always worked, so I was a very independent latch-key kid. The first thing I learned to cook was a grilled cheese sandwich, then an egg sandwich. I had strong female role models with my Mother and her Mother. My grandmother used to read to me a lot, which is probably where I got my love of books. I was also an over-achiever at school, loving the attention it got me at school and at home. I took a lot of arts and crafts classes throughout school. Recently, while cleaning out an old storage box during the pandemic, I found a hand-made book I made from construction paper in grade school. It was such fun to see that my life was influenced by books, even in grade school! As I look back on all the jobs I’ve had since college, most involved some sort of printing, publishing, and/or the “making” of books!
