Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Schmidt
Hi SARAH, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been a pediatric speech language pathologist in the St. Louis/St. Charles area for a little over 20 years. I often make up songs to familiar nursery rhyme tunes with my patients to support their speech and language development. One day, a colleague mentioned I should make them into children’s books. I brushed her off at first but as I started thinking more about it, I realized what an amazing idea that would be for myself and for the families I serve. I was able to get connected with a local publisher and illustrator and my songs have started to become fun children’s books!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a fairly smooth road, my illustrator and I clicked immediately and I was able to find a supportive publisher. The process took longer than I imagined and the upfront costs can be prohibitive. I wish I had done more research before starting instead of while I went along. I learned so much that I will be able to tweak for my next book.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been a pediatric speech language pathologist for over 20 years. I specialize in treating children with childhood apraxia of speech, children who are gestalt language processors, AAC users and children with articulation/phonological disorders.
I have advanced training in childhood apraxia of speech. I am a sensory trained SLP. I love being a lifelong learner to be able to support my patients in the best ways I can. It’s part of the reason why I began authoring children’s books.
I am most proud of starting my own private practice and building connections to promote my books. Trying something new can be scary and hard.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the SLP therapy world, I anticipate more interactions with AI, which could be really beneficial for people who use alternative communication methods. I also see more home supports happening in the way of technology.
In the author world, some shifts are expected but parents and caregivers are always looking for books to share with the little ones in their lives. There will always be a need for books, whether hard copy or e-books.
