Hi Anzal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a 26-year-old makeup artist whose passion for beauty started in childhood. I vividly remember watching my mom get dolled up, completely captivated by the way makeup could transform and empower. Trips to our local MAC store were like stepping into another world—seeing makeup artists work their magic left me inspired to try it myself.
When I was 2, my family immigrated from Pakistan to America. My parents arrived with little knowledge of the language or culture, so we had to navigate everything on our own. Despite the challenges, one thing that always stood out to me was my mom’s love for makeup. It became a constant, something that not only sparked my creativity but also connected me to my roots and to her. That passion quickly became mine too.
I started watching tutorials and practicing on the women in my family, who generously let me experiment on them. Over time, I refined my skills and gained professional experience working at Ulta and Sephora, where I learned the ins and outs of the beauty industry.
In 2023, I decided to turn my lifelong passion into a business. I began offering makeup services and sharing my work on social media, and the response from the St. Louis community has been incredible. It’s been humbling to see how far I’ve come, and I’m so excited to continue growing, sharing my artistry, and connecting with others through makeup.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road; like any journey, it’s had its share of challenges. One of the biggest struggles I faced early on was self-doubt. Makeup is an art form, and like any artist, I questioned whether my skills were good enough to stand out, especially in a saturated industry. It took time to build the confidence to share my work publicly and trust in my own unique style.
Another major challenge was juggling multiple responsibilities. While pursuing my degree and working a job in healthcare at a hospital, finding time for makeup felt almost impossible at times. I’d spend long hours at the hospital, then come home and dedicate my evenings to practicing new techniques or watching tutorials. It was a lot to handle, but my passion for makeup kept me going. Those moments taught me the value of persistence and commitment.
When I finally launched my own makeup services in 2023, I also faced the hurdle of building a client base from scratch. St. Louis has a thriving beauty scene, but it took a lot of networking, late nights working on social media content, and word-of-mouth referrals to get my name out there. Thankfully, the community’s response was incredible, but it was a journey of proving myself and gaining trust.
These struggles have made me more resilient and have pushed me to continuously improve my craft. Every challenge has been a stepping stone, and overcoming them has made the victories even sweeter. And truth be told, my support system is what has helped me continue to grow and improve.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Pakistani makeup artist, I specialize in two distinct styles: the no-makeup makeup look and traditional Pakistani bridal makeup. The no-makeup makeup look has become my signature style; I focus on enhancing natural features with a soft, fresh, and flawless finish that brings out my clients’ natural beauty without feeling heavy or overdone. It’s all about creating a radiant, effortless glow that looks like you’re not wearing much makeup at all.
On the other end of the spectrum, I also excel in Pakistani bridal makeup, which is close to my heart. I love working with brides to create timeless, elegant looks that honor our rich cultural heritage while catering to modern trends. From intricate eye details to perfectly matched lip shades, I ensure every bride feels confident and beautiful on her special day.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. It’s incredibly rewarding to have someone sit in my chair, knowing they can relax and feel confident that they’ll leave looking their best. I believe what sets me apart is my focus on creating a personalized experience for each client. I take the time to understand their preferences, skin type, and the look they envision, whether it’s a natural everyday glow or a stunning bridal transformation. It’s this attention to detail and commitment to making my clients feel their absolute best that has helped me build a loyal clientele.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, my main focus is on continuing to grow my clientele and build strong relationships with those who trust me with their special moments. I’m excited to keep expanding my portfolio and reach, taking on more diverse projects, from bridal events to everyday glam.
I also want to give back to the St. Louis community by sharing my passion for makeup and helping people feel their best with every look I create. Whether it’s enhancing natural beauty with a no-makeup makeup look or crafting a stunning bridal transformation, I’m committed to making each client feel confident and beautiful. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it leads as I continue to grow and connect with even more people. If anything, I hope to have my own studio in the near future!!
