Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Foster
Hi Tori, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my business back in June 2020 during the COVID-19 outbreak era. At the time, I was attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis and undergoing a bachelor’s in Media Studies major. I was working three jobs and going to school full-time. Due to the campus closing to follow health and state guidelines, I lost two jobs. I decided to start my baking business due to my decrease in income. I started off selling vanilla cupcakes with buttercream icing and strawberries on the top. I made a flyer on Canva and posted it on Facebook to share with family and friends. I sold the cupcakes in six counts.
I got to where I am today by never giving up. I made mistakes but I also made desserts that I always dreamed of. Every day I am perfecting my craft but I have never allowed myself to feel defeated even if I get overwhelmed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I overcame many obstacles such as pricing, policies, and menu selection. Once the price of groceries increased, I had to consider ingredient costs, market demand, and competitors’ prices while still charging myself a standard pay. I also faced the challenge of time management. In 2023, I gave birth to my son. Becoming a mother changed my availability but he’s two now and I feel my routine and prices are set. Last year I set up permanent days, hours, and policies based on the seasons.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have an at-home bakery where I sell over 50 dessert combinations. All my desserts are made from scratch. I am open daily from 8 am-5 pm. I offer pickup, delivery for $8.99, and shipping. I use priority express boxes to ensure customers receive their cookies within 2-3 business days. In March I will be launching my cookie dough line. I want people to be able to bake my cookies at their convenience.
My highest-selling desserts are customized candied fruit and cookie trays. I am known for my wide selection of menu options. It’s what I’m most proud of. I started my menu with four items and to know I taught myself all these different baking skills through trial and error amaze me every day. I have recently offered cinnamon rolls, brownies, and cookie cakes on my website.
I love to give back to my community and supporters so I do occasional giveaways, raffles, and sales through social media.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Everybody’s business journey is unique and different. Always pace yourself with your work. Learn your target audience and competitors. Never be scared to step out of your comfort zone. Never stop, slow progress is still progress. Always charge based on your worth and skill level.
