Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer McDanielof McDaniel Nutrition Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer McDaniel

Hi Jennifer, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a junior in high school when my father underwent quadruple bypass surgery at the young age of 52. That was a pivotal moment for me—it opened my eyes to the powerful role food plays in health. At the same time, I had always loved cooking. My parents both worked full-time, and my mom taught piano lessons in the afternoons leading up to dinner, so quite often, I found myself in the kitchen preparing meals for my sister and me when we didn’t feel like having a microwaved dinner.

I was an active teen who loved sports, but eventually, I fell in love with running. When I told my high school guidance counselor about my interest in science, health, food, and prevention, she introduced me to the field of dietetics. I never looked back.

I pursued my degree in dietetics at the University of Tennessee. I had dreamed of going out of state, but since college tuition was my responsibility, staying in-state made the most sense. My father always told me that what I got out of college was up to me—it wasn’t so much about where I went, but what I made of it. After graduating, I matched with Saint Louis University for my dietetic internship and earned my master’s degree in sports nutrition.

I ended up staying in St. Louis, both for love and career opportunities. I spent over six years as a faculty member in SLU’s nutrition and dietetics department. When my husband and I decided to start a family, I left my full-time role but continued teaching a few classes while exploring my own business ventures. During my time at SLU, I often moonlighted—seeing clients and offering corporate wellness services during lunch breaks. That experience gave me the confidence to take the leap and start McDaniel Nutrition.

Now, 13 years later, McDaniel Nutrition has grown into a thriving practice with six dietitians, each bringing their own passion and expertise. What sets us apart is our commitment to listening, collaborative care, and personalized nutrition. We work one-on-one with clients in areas like gut health, heart health, family nutrition, and sports nutrition. Our goal is to match each client with the right dietitian, ensuring they receive the best possible care. We offer both telehealth and in-person services at our office in Clayton.

As the owner, I also partner with several St. Louis businesses to provide corporate wellness programs. I love the opportunity to facilitate change not just on an individual level but within entire organizations. Looking back, I’m so grateful for the experiences that led me here—from cooking meals in my childhood kitchen to building a practice that helps people take charge of their health in meaningful ways.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course not! But that’s the cool part—learning from mistakes, navigating business decisions, and growing from personal challenges. One of the most pivotal moments in our journey was deciding to transition from a private-pay model to accepting a large number of insurance providers. Our goal was to serve our community well. I firmly believe that everyone deserves the highest quality, evidence-based nutrition care, and I wanted our team to be the ones providing it.

However, over time, I found that while I was committed to paying my team what they deserved, the low reimbursement rates for nutrition services started to strain our cash flow. It simply wasn’t sustainable. Eventually, we shifted to a hybrid model, accepting some insurance while maintaining a stronger private-pay structure. It was a tough but necessary decision.

Through it all, our passion for deeply caring for our clients has never wavered. We know the work we do is meaningful and of immense value, regardless of how it’s reimbursed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

We invite you to explore our services and discover what feels right for you.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that I am an equal to my client. It’s not about me as the “professional” and them as the “client in need of help.” It’s two equals—listening, learning, and exploring together. My clients already have so much wisdom within them, and one of my greatest roles is to help them recognize and trust that.

I’ve also learned the power of true listening. No matter how many times I’ve met with a client, each session is a new session. I come in with a beginner’s mind, fully present to what’s unfolding in that moment. Listening well isn’t about waiting for my turn to speak or pulling from a busy brain—it’s about slowing down, getting still, and tuning in. That’s where the most meaningful conversations happen.
