Rising Stars: Meet Marisa S White of Saint Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa S White.

Hi Marisa S, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been drawn to art for as long as I can remember—always the odd one out in a family of medical professionals and science majors, tucked away in my room drawing or painting. My dad gave me his old Nikon film camera, and that pretty much set everything in motion. I studied drawing and painting in college, but it wasn’t until I picked up photography that I found my voice. I began blending the two—photography and collage—as a way to express emotions I couldn’t quite put into words.

A summer in Missoula at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography sealed the deal for me. It was there I was introduced to Lightroom and Photoshop—and suddenly, everything I imagined in my head felt possible. I realized the only real limit was my own imagination.

It took me a long time to finally take a leap of faith and pursue a creative life full-time. This month marked my fourth year and I’ve never looked back.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge? Honestly—fear. Let’s just call it what it is. Fear has this tricky way of convincing you it’s protecting you, when really, it’s just slowly suffocating your dreams. It’s like agreeing to live a smaller life out of self-preservation. I’ve been afraid of all the usual suspects—rejection, failure, hunger, shame, feeling unworthy… impostor syndrome, you name it.

Over the years, I’ve pushed myself into some pretty wild physical challenges—not just for the thrill, but to confront fear head-on. It’s a way to prove to myself that I can do hard things, survive them, and come out stronger. Once I realized I could face things that could actually kill me—and live to tell the tale—it made the more subtle, emotional fears easier to navigate. No sabertooth tigers in sight, just the everyday ones whispering from the corners of the mind.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create surreal, narrative-based photomontages that explore the emotional landscape of being human—grief, transformation, resilience, and everything in between. My work is often layered with symbolism and dreamlike imagery. However, I use surrealism not to escape reality, or even depict the dream world, but to amplify emotions that are hard to put into words. I’m drawn to themes of spiritual reflection, personal growth, and the quiet moments that shape our inner worlds.

I’m probably best known for creating visual metaphors that speak to shared emotional experiences. My collectors often say the work touches something they didn’t even realize needed to be seen. I’ve had the honor of exhibiting nationally and internationally, and one of my proudest moments was having a piece shown at the Crocker Art Museum.

But what truly makes me proud is when someone tells me they felt seen through my work—that it gave them a sense of connection or catharsis. What sets me apart, I think, is the honesty and vulnerability I bring to each piece. Every image is a little window into something real…a glimpse of the extraordinary hidden within the everyday.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m relatively new to the St. Louis area and always on the lookout for fellow creatives—just trying to find my tribe.

From time to time, I bring in models to help bring my narratives to life. If you’re someone who’s not afraid to get a little weird, wear something unexpected, or showcase a unique talent, I’d love to hear from you.

I’m always excited about new opportunities to exhibit my work. I’ve been dreaming up a collaboration with the St. Louis Zoo or Missouri Botanical Garden—something immersive and meaningful, with a fundraising component woven in. Maybe one day!

And of course, all of my work is available for collecting through my website. There’s truly no greater compliment than when someone connects so deeply with a piece that they feel compelled to make it part of their world.
