Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Williams.
Gabriel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a designer at heart since I was old enough to get grounded for cutting up my clothes. Style was never something I waited for permission to create—I took what I had and made it my own, even as a kid.
Fast forward to college during the height of COVID—boredom met creativity in my room, and the result was a painted denim jacket that started it all. I didn’t have the right tools, the right paints, or even a clear process. But what I did have was curiosity, vision, and a passion to make something different.
After graduating, I realized this “just for fun” hustle had real potential. I started showing up to pop-up shops consistently—sometimes every month. And each event gave me not just exposure, but confidence. Enough confidence to pitch for a spot in an incubator space in the heart of The Grove.
That dream became real in October 2024. Now, I’m not only running Truly Rare Customs full-time—I’m also helping the next generation unlock their creativity, just like I did. From cutting up my clothes as a kid to opening a shop and teaching others how to turn vision into wearable art… it’s been a journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth? Whew—not even close. It’s been the bumpiest of bumpy rides, full of sharp turns, steep hills, and unexpected detours. But the one thing that’s kept me going is passion. Because when you’re doing something you truly love, even the chaos starts to feel like part of the art.
I’ve always been an artist at heart, but I never formally studied fashion design, painting, or sewing. I majored in Mass Media Arts, so when it came to turning my creativity into a business, I was completely self-taught. That meant a lot of late nights with YouTube tutorials, lots of Googling, lots of trial and error… and yes, a lot of money lost in the learning process.
The business side of art was a whole new world—one that didn’t come with instructions. But every misstep came with a lesson, and every setback pushed me forward. It’s been anything but smooth, but the growth, the impact, and the journey have made every bump worthwhile. I’m still learning, still building, and still moving further than where I started—and that’s the real win.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I run Truly Rare Customs, a custom streetwear brand that blends art, fashion, and individuality. At its core, it’s more than just clothing—it’s wearable storytelling.
Inside my retail shop, you’ll find a mix of branded gear ready to grab off the rack and one-of-a-kind custom pieces. I specialize in everything from hand-painted jackets, shoes, and pants to heat-pressed graphics, sewn alterations, and promotional gear. Whether you’re looking for a one-off piece that no one else owns or bulk orders for your brand or event, I’ve got you covered.
What sets Truly Rare Customs apart is that we don’t limit ourselves to just one type of customization. A lot of places only offer heat pressing or embroidery—but we’re a one-stop shop for creative expression. Whether it’s hand-painted artwork, fully custom garments, or wholesale options, I offer both individual and business-level design services under one roof.
If you can dream it, I’m probably already figuring out how to make it wearable
Any big plans?
I’m currently part of the first cohort at the Eric Outlaw Business Center, which has been a major stepping stone in growing Truly Rare Customs and shaping my journey as a creative entrepreneur.
Looking ahead, my vision is to expand my impact beyond just clothing—I want to inspire and guide the next generation of designers and creatives. I plan to create opportunities where young people can learn the art of design and the basics of building a business around it. It’s important to me that they don’t just create—but understand how to confidently share and sell their work too.
The goal is to build something bigger than just a brand—it’s about creating a legacy that educates, empowers, and uplifts through creativity.
