Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Murphy.
Hi Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in 2009 at my first salon, where I spent a few years before realizing it wasn’t the right fit for me. However, I remembered a conversation I had while in beauty school—my manager at the time worked at a restaurant and told me about Studio 703, where his friend was the owner. I decided to apply, and from the moment I walked in for my interview, I knew it was the place for me. The owners were incredibly genuine and passionate about their work, and the positive energy in the salon was undeniable.
Now, almost 13 years later, I’m still at Studio 703, and I couldn’t be happier. I even brought two of my best friends from my previous salon with me, and what we have at Studio 703 is truly special. We’ve been through so much together and, in many ways, we’re like family.
Over the years, my life has changed significantly—I went from working almost every hour the salon was open to getting married and having three kids in three years. With that shift, I adjusted my schedule to just three days a week so I could be home more with my little ones. But no matter what, my passion for this career remains stronger than ever.
Hair color, layered haircuts, and extensions are where I truly shine, but I also love doing bridal hair and makeup. The salon is always buzzing during wedding season with on-location weddings, which keeps me busy and excited. But what I treasure most about this job is the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many of them have watched me grow—going from riding a Harley to driving a minivan, running after my kids at soccer games. I love making people feel their best and ensuring they have a fun, relaxed experience during their appointment. My goal is not just to make someone love their hair, but to make them laugh. Expect plenty of laughs and real conversations about life, kids, books, and everything in between. The good, the bad, the ugly—I’m always there to listen.
When I’m not in the salon, you’ll find me at Sam’s Club or Aldi (I know, very glamorous), at the park, cheering on my kids at soccer and softball, or enjoying some family time at our RV, glamping, and boating. We love to travel, and my husband, who owns two companies—KPW Custom Builds and KPW Roofing—plans the most amazing vacations. He works hard so we can play even harder. Family is at the heart of everything we do, and we truly cherish our time together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first salon I worked at really made me question if this industry was the right fit for me. The turnover rate was high, and drama seemed to be a constant presence. For many of us, it took years of turmoil to finally walk away. Honestly, I could write a book about everything we went through there.
Looking back now, with a bit more age and wisdom, I wish we had left sooner. But despite everything, they didn’t succeed in breaking our spirits or destroying our passion. In an odd way, I’m actually grateful for my time there. Their business plan was solid when it came to growing your clientele—I went from being a new stylist to being 100% booked in just six months.
What I took from that experience is invaluable. I now have the support of incredible leadership, something I never had there. Even better, nearly every stylist I worked with during that time is still a good friend today—and I’m proud to say that all of them are thriving in their careers.
Looking back, I’m so incredibly thankful for the salon I’m at now. I’ve learned that when you’re in the right environment, surrounded by the right people, success feels almost effortless.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I just realized I’ve probably talked the most about this so far, haha! But I’m genuinely passionate about what I do, even though I’m more of a stay-at-home mom these days than a working one, especially in the summer. My specialty? Color—anything and everything related to it. I’m most known for creating beautiful dimensional brunettes and redheads, but don’t worry, I’ve got blondes covered too!
Recently, I’ve also started diving into the world of hair extensions, and I’m loving it! But beyond the technical side, what I’m most proud of is how I make my clients feel. I want every single one of you to leave all your worries and stress behind, even if it’s just for the time you’re in my chair. My goal is to make you feel relaxed, refreshed, and enjoy your time with me. If you need to get some work done on your laptop, that’s totally fine—I’ll make sure you can focus without interruptions (except, of course, when it’s time for one of my famous scalp massages!).
What truly sets me apart is my attention to detail. I listen closely to what you like and don’t like, and we always start with a thorough consultation the first time we meet. I want to make sure your expectations are realistic and achievable, and I’ll never promise something that isn’t possible or a look that would compromise the health of your hair.
I’m also super mindful throughout the process—I like to imagine how I’d feel if I were in your chair, and I want to make sure you enjoy the experience just as much as I enjoy working with you.
Oh, and just a heads up—I’m probably known for my sense of humor! There’s no stuffiness here, so feel free to be yourself. I’m here for it!
What are your plans for the future?
The biggest change ahead is probably how I balance my time. I truly love what I do, but my family will always be my top priority. With my kids now 3, 5, and 6, I’m realizing how much joy comes from being there for their games, school events, and all the little moments in between. Lately, I’ve been carving out more evenings and weekends to be present with them. They’re only little for such a short time, and I don’t want to miss the fun.
