Rising Stars: Meet Kenneth Burress of Atlanta Ga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Burress.

Hi Kenneth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2009, my world changed forever when my father passed away. His loss broke something inside me. I fell into a deep depression that I couldn’t escape. My attitude toward life turned dark. I was angry, bitter, and lost — walking through each day with no purpose and no peace.
If I’m being honest, I had a death wish.

But even in that darkness, God never let go of me.
He showed me mercy and grace time after time — even when I didn’t deserve it. I ran from Him, ignored Him, and doubted everything, yet He still guided me, even when I couldn’t see it. Looking back now, I realize He was preparing me for something greater.

In 2020, I started working out. At first, it wasn’t about goals or fitness — it was therapy. The gym became my safe place, my way of fighting back against the pain. Each rep, each drop of sweat, was me battling through the thoughts that tried to break me.

Then in 2021, something unexpected happened. The gym owner approached me and asked if I’d ever thought about becoming a personal trainer. I laughed it off. I didn’t have the confidence. My self-esteem was low, and I didn’t see myself the way others did.
But the owner didn’t give up. He kept asking, kept believing in me, and one day, he even sent me the link to sign up for my personal training certification.

I hesitated — then finally took a leap of faith.

I studied for months, doubting myself every step of the way. But when I took that test, I passed. And in that moment, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years — pride. Hope. Purpose. It was like God was saying, “See? I told you I wasn’t done with you.”

That moment lit a fire in me. I went back and earned my nutrition certification too. What started as an outlet for pain turned into a calling — a mission to help others rebuild themselves from the inside out. “Kutup Kenny Fitness” was born!!!

Now, as a personal trainer, my focus isn’t just on building muscle. It’s on building people — mind, body, and spirit. Because real strength doesn’t just come from lifting weights. It comes from faith, discipline, perseverance, and the courage to rise up after life knocks you down.

Every day I step into the gym, I’m reminded of how far God has brought me. What once felt like punishment turned out to be preparation.
And now, my purpose is simple — to use my story to inspire others to find their strength the same way I found mines.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly I don’t think anything that you’re trying to build for the first time is gonna be smooth. When I first started as a personal trainer, nobody took me seriously — and honestly, I couldn’t blame them. Not too long ago, I was the guy who drank almost every day, and popped pills just to numb whatever I didn’t want to face. I wasn’t exactly the image of health or discipline. So when I decided to step into fitness, people looked at me sideways.

They remembered the old me — the one with a bad attitude, the one who talked big but didn’t follow through. And when I tried to change, most people thought it was just another phase.

At first, getting clients was almost impossible. I’d post, promote, and reach out, only to get the same response over and over: “Yeah bro, I’ma sign up soon.” But “soon” never came. Instead, my DMs stayed full of people trying to get free advice — asking about workouts, nutrition, or “just a quick question” — because they didn’t want to invest in a consultation. I used to laugh about it, but deep down it was frustrating. Everyone wanted results, but nobody wanted to put in the work or the commitment.

Still, I kept pushing. I stopped popping pills. No more alcohol everyday. Maybe a drink on the weekend if that! I stopped numbing myself. I started showing up — for me first, then for others. Every day, I trained harder, learned more, and built my discipline. Slowly, people started noticing the difference — not just in my body, but in my energy, my mindset, my consistency.

The same people who once doubted me started to ask how I did it. Some of them even signed up. Others still make excuses — but now, I understand that not everyone is ready for change.

This journey hasn’t been easy. It’s been humbling, frustrating, and at times lonely. But every struggle has been worth it, because now when people see me, they don’t just see who I was — they see who I’ve become.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in strength and conditioning training, with a focus on helping individuals unlock their full potential both physically and mentally. Known for my ability to boost confidence and provide genuine support, I take pride in being a thoughtful listener who understands each client’s unique journey. Guided by my faith in God, I strive to lead with integrity, purpose, and encouragement. My mission is to inspire and bring out the best in everyone I work with, fostering growth, discipline, and lasting transformation. I’m most proud of my son who graduated with a 4.0 and honors, along with two scholarships. I couldn’t be prouder of him especially since I didn’t finish school. “What sets me apart is my mindset. I don’t think like everyone else — I don’t let a bad moment turn into a bad day. Every setback is just preparation for what I prayed for. I’m built different. I’m Godbody. No matter what life throws my way, I might bend, but I’ll never break. I’m still ten toes down, still pushing, and still becoming everything God called me to be.”

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out — pray for guidance. Moving without direction will keep you lost every time. Everybody’s input doesn’t matter. What works for them might not work for you. You might have to start over ten times, and that’s okay. The real question is — are you willing to commit and put in the work? Are you willing to miss out on what’s cool now so you can live comfortably later? Always keep God first. Listen fast, speak slow. Read. Learn. Absorb. Apply. Repeat. If there’s one thing I wish I knew before I started, it’s the power of delayed gratification. Nothing worth having comes fast or easy. Every shortcut only sends you back to the starting line to do it the right way. You have to give a seed time to grow. Whatever your passion is, water it, care for it, and give it everything you’ve got. Fall in love with the process — not the timing. Because the moment you stop chasing quick results and start trusting the grind, that’s when everything begins to change.
