Today we’d like to introduce you to April Jones.
Hi April , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been one of faith, resilience, and rediscovery. I’ve always had a creative spirit and a deep desire to help others bring their ideas to life. While I was still working full-time in corporate America, I started Needed Basics Digital Services on the side — designing websites, building brands, and learning everything I could about digital marketing after work hours.
Balancing both worlds wasn’t easy, but I knew I was building something special. I wanted to create a space where small business owners — especially those who didn’t have a strong online presence — could look professional, confident, and capable from day one. I saw firsthand how a clean website or strong brand identity could completely shift how people view your business, and I wanted to give that power to others.
Then life changed in ways I could have never prepared for. My son passed away, and that loss completely shattered me. It was the darkest time of my life, but it also forced me to slow down and reevaluate everything — what mattered, why I was here, and what I wanted to do with the time I still had. Creating became my therapy. Needed Basics wasn’t just a business anymore — it became part of my healing, a place to pour my energy, faith, and love into something that could still grow even when I felt broken.
After finding my footing again, I took the leap and went full-time with Needed Basics. Not long after, I faced another life-changing challenge — I suffered a brain aneurysm that required emergency surgery. One moment I was running my business as usual, and the next, my life was hanging in the balance. I spent fifteen days in the ICU, unsure of what recovery would look like. It was the most humbling experience of my life — to have everything stop so suddenly and realize that life can shift in an instant.
But I survived. And that survival reshaped me. I came out of that hospital with a different kind of strength — not the kind that pushes through everything, but the kind that learns to pause, heal, and still move forward with grace. Recovery is an ongoing journey, both physically and emotionally, but I have learned to listen to my body, honor my limits, and still create from a place of gratitude. Every project I take on now carries deeper meaning, because I truly understand how precious every moment is.
Today, Needed Basics works with clients all over the country, helping them build their presence online with confidence and clarity. My story is proof that even through pain, purpose can be born. I’ve learned that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back — it’s about transforming. And for me, that transformation continues every day through the work I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all — but I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything. My road has been filled with detours, delays, and a lot of lessons that came the hard way. Losing my son was the first major heartbreak that completely shifted my world. It took a long time to find my footing again, and even longer to find joy in creating.
Then, just as things were starting to stabilize, I suffered a brain aneurysm that required emergency surgery and a 15-day stay in the ICU. Recovery is a process. I had to relearn how to slow down, listen to my body, and work in a new rhythm. This experience changed the way I define strength.
Beyond my personal challenges, entrepreneurship itself isn’t easy. Running a business means wearing every hat — designer, marketer, accountant, and problem solver. There are months when things flow smoothly, and others when nothing goes as planned. But I’ve learned to see every challenge as part of the process.
Through it all, I’ve held onto faith and gratitude. Every setback taught me something — how to be patient with myself, how to trust timing, and how to keep creating even when life doesn’t look like you imagined. My path hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been purposeful. And that makes every bump worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m the owner and creative behind Needed Basics Digital Services, where I specialize in custom web design, branding, and digital content creation for small businesses and start-ups across the country. My focus is on helping entrepreneurs build an online presence that looks professional, feels authentic, and works seamlessly.
I’ve built over 60 websites across a wide range of industries — from nonprofits and medical companies to beauty brands, real estate professionals, and creative entrepreneurs. What I’m most proud of is how personal the experience is for each client. I don’t use cookie-cutter templates or one-size-fits-all solutions. Every design is created from scratch to reflect the client’s voice, vision, and goals.
What sets me apart is the level of personal attention and empathy I bring to my work. Many of my clients are just starting out — they have a dream but don’t know where to begin. I walk with them through every step: from defining their brand identity and creating their logo, to content development and launching their site. My background in both design and business strategy helps me bridge creativity with function — so every site isn’t just beautiful, it’s built to grow.
I’m also proud of how my journey has shaped the heart of my business. After surviving a brain aneurysm and learning to rebuild my life, I understand how valuable purpose and passion really are. That perspective shows up in my work. I design with intention — every color, layout, and message is meant to inspire confidence and connection.
At its core, Needed Basics is about empowerment through design — giving people the tools, visuals, and presence they need to stand tall in their business. Seeing my clients succeed, knowing I played a part in helping them look and feel like they belong in their industry — that’s the part that fulfills me the most.
What makes you happy?
Helping others succeed genuinely fills me up. When a client tells me their business grew because of something I designed, or when they finally feel confident about how their brand looks — that joy feels personal. It reminds me that my gift has purpose.
At the end of the day, what makes me happiest is knowing that despite everything I’ve been through, I’m still here — still creating, still giving, still becoming. That’s happiness to me.
