Community Highlights: Meet Aubrie Carpenter of Missouri Institute of Massage Therapy and Bodywork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aubrie Carpenter.

Hi Aubrie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a massage therapist since 2000, during 2020 I got booked out for a whole year, and thought I would teach others what I was doing so I could get help with how busy I was. I noticed many massage therapists coming out of massage school had the knowledge of how to pass a test, but lacking the techniques to care for others properly (let alone care for themselves so they could continue in this career of massage beyond a few years). I was disappointed for them and wanted to make a change. After much debating with myself and God I was inspired to start a massage school teaching the same techniques that I learned in school. This includes knowledge of various techniques (massage, bodywork, Eastern medicine, energy work, and emotional release) and understanding that all work together to help the individual’s body to heal itself and to make each massage unique.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It took some time to get everything right and then even longer for the state to approve the school because of backlog. The other obstacles have been when you are starting a business form nothing no one wants to give you a loan or work with you until you have been established for at least 2 years. So making sure I worked hard enough to pay rent on my own and getting the supplies I needed to get things started for the massage school all on my own.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Missouri Institute of Massage Therapy and Bodywork program prepares students to go forward ready to work in any environment they prefer. Through gaining knowledge in a variety of bodywork methods, our training program provides a blended approach to help students create their own way of massaging or utilizing the specific techniques in which they have been trained. Our goal is to educate individuals who wish to become massage therapists, along with providing continuing education to current healthcare professionals in the area of bodywork therapy.

Upon completion of the massage therapy and bodywork program in the following areas: anatomy and physiology, therapeutic massage, energy work, related modalities, and bodywork specialization, students will receive a Certificate of Completion. Along with the certificate, the student will be able to demonstrate massage skills that have prepared them to go into the competitive field of massage having the skills to get employment with a massage business, become an independent contractor, or become a business owner. Students will have gained a comprehensive and functional understanding of anatomy and physiology as it applies to massage therapy and bodywork. They will also have an understanding of business and marketing in which one could initiate a successful professional massage therapy operation. Students will have the knowledge needed to care for oneself in order to have a long and successful career in massage therapy and bodywork. They will have a clear understanding of what it means to be a professional massage therapist with ethical, safe and essential practices. Upon completing the massage therapy and bodywork program students will have completed 828 hours which includes 121 hours of supervised Clinical Internship. Besides massage therapy and advanced massage therapy, students will leave with a knowledge and comfort level to also be able to perform the following techniques:
