Community Highlights: Meet Allison Satkowski of Sacred Practice Reiki Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Satkowski.

Hi Allison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey to owning a Reiki Studio begins in an unexpected place. I was working towards my bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at Mizzou when I taught my first Yoga class at the student rec center. The job was so fulfilling! I was grateful to have the opportunity to help my classmates deal with the stress that comes with the demands of obtaining a degree. During my junior year of college, I experienced a large loss of a loved one in my life which drove me into a deep dive of yoga philosophy and practice. Upon graduating, I decided to focus my professional energies assisting others though I still sew and love finding a unexpected piece at a second hand store!

I received my 200HR Yoga teacher training at Kripalu, in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. This epicenter of all things yoga was the first place I heard the term, Reiki and the first time I received Reiki, I was blown away by the simplicity of the practice and its powerful effects on my emotional regulation. Since then, I have completed my training to teach and practice Reiki. In 2021, I opened Sacred Practice Reiki Studio, where I offer Reiki sessions and training, Yoga classes, and Sound Healing with Tibetan singing bowls.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With any journey there are unexpected obstacles and I have definitely encountered many along my path. Recently, I have reopened Sacred Practice Reiki Studio due to finally recovering from multiple traumatic brain injuries over the course of 3 years. The silver lining in this experience is I now have a wider understanding from my direct experience of how the brain works when exposed to emotional and physical trauma, which is why I got into this field in the first place. I am so happy and grateful to be back in the Studio to assist others in their healing process!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique. A session is facilitated on a massage table but unlike a massage you are fully clothed. It is wonderful for people who are experiencing stress, burnout, anxiety, and/or depression, because it works to soothe the nervous system through gentle and warming touch. Historically in Japan, it has been used to treat other health issues such as cancer, heart disease, chronic pain, and so on.

Along with sessions, I also offer one on one training. Most Reiki training available is done in a group setting, which does not offer the customization of the teachings and practices that I am able to offer. When I talk to students, they all have varying backgrounds of knowledge as well as differing goals with the practice. The one on one experience gives me the opportunity to not only teach more effectively, but I also view the training as a chance to deepen a student’s self awareness and facilitate a catalyst for their own healing journey.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I am such a Reiki and Yoga nerd! I have a small but vast personal library on differing aspects of both practices. If you need a recommendation beyond what I have listed below, please just reach out. I’d be happy to help!

If someone is interested in how Reiki works and its potential power, I suggest The Healing Power of Reiki by Raven Keyes. She blends heartwarming stories with easy to follow meditations to give you an inside look on what it is like to be a Reiki practitioner and recipient.

If someone is interested in managing their depression and anxiety with Yoga, I recommend Yoga for Emotional Balance by Bo Forbes. Bo is a yoga therapist that expertly walks you through how your nervous system works and offers accessible restorative postures to help alleviate your symptoms.

And for the podcaster, I recommend this episode of the Telepathy Tapes (S1E29: Talk Tracks EP.17: The Healing Power of Consciousness with Deepak Chopra and Dr. Shamini Jain).
