Inspiring Conversations with Kimberly Beckley of Simplifying Beauty Salon & Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Beckley.

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my beauty career in 2008 as a cosmetologist, but I honestly had no idea where it would eventually lead me. A few years later, people began asking about lash extensions. I signed up for a training in 2012 without expecting anything big from it. I was simply curious. I did not realize at the time that it would become the turning point in my career.

When I started working with lashes, I fell in love with the calmness and the connection that came with the service. I enjoyed the quiet conversations, the trust that forms when someone allows you to work so close to their eyes, and the feeling that washes over a client when they see their reflection. I began to understand that this work was not only about beauty. It was about giving women a moment to breathe and a space where they could simply be themselves.

My path has had many twists and many moments of self-doubt. For a long time, I believed that success meant doing things the way everyone else in the industry did them. I tried to match their tone, their style, and their approach. Eventually, I realized that none of that felt like me. The more I tried to fit in, the more disconnected I felt from my own purpose.

Everything shifted when I gave myself permission to show up as who I really am. I am someone who cares deeply about people. I love structure and systems. I love creating experiences that feel warm, calm, and thoughtful. I love helping women walk out feeling lighter than when they walked in. Once I leaned into that, Simplifying Beauty began to grow in a way that felt aligned and natural.

Today, the salon is a place where women can relax, recharge, and feel cared for. It is also the home of Simplifying Beauty Academy, where I teach new lash artists how to build a strong foundation and create a career they can be proud of. I am also very involved in my community through the O’Fallon-Shiloh Chamber of Commerce and Little Black Book: Women in Business. Being active in these organizations fills my cup because I genuinely enjoy helping connect people and lifting up other women in business.

I am also a mother to two adult sons with special needs, and that part of my life has shaped me in a profound way. It has taught me patience, resilience, tenderness, and the importance of creating environments where people feel safe and supported. Those lessons show up in my work every single day.

Looking back, my journey has not been traditional. It has been full of growth, learning, and moments when I had to choose who I wanted to become. I am grateful for every step because it brought me to a place where I can make a difference in the lives of the women who trust me with their time and their care.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I think most people see the finished version of a business and rarely see everything that happened behind the scenes to get there. My journey has been full of growth, but it has also come with some very real challenges.

One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to build a business while also being a mother to two adult sons with special needs. Their needs can change quickly, and my home life has required a level of flexibility and emotional strength that most people never see. There were many days when I felt pulled in two directions, trying to be fully present for my family while also trying to build something meaningful for myself. Balancing both has taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of creating a business that supports my life, not the other way around.

Another struggle came from within myself. In the beginning, I spent a lot of time comparing my business to others in the industry. I thought I needed to mirror what everyone else was doing in order to succeed. That led to a lot of frustration, because none of it felt aligned with who I am. It took time, reflection, and a lot of honest conversations with myself to realize that the best thing I could do was show up as my authentic self. Once I embraced that, everything started to move in a healthier direction.

There were also practical challenges. Growing a salon in a competitive market, navigating staffing changes, and learning how to lead effectively while still learning myself all came with trial and error. There were months when I questioned whether I was doing the right thing, and seasons where I had to rebuild systems and start over.

Even though the road has been anything but smooth, every struggle has shaped the business I have today. It taught me how to create experiences that feel calm and supportive, because I know how much women need that. It taught me how to build strong systems because I needed my business to run well even on the hard days at home. Most importantly, it taught me that success does not always come from doing things perfectly. It comes from showing up with heart, even when the path is uncertain.

As you know, we’re big fans of Simplifying Beauty Salon & Academy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Simplifying Beauty is a lash, brow, and spray tan salon in O’Fallon, Illinois. I created it as a place where women can slow down, breathe, and feel genuinely cared for. I specialize in custom eyelash extensions, brow services, and natural-looking spray tans. Although these services are what bring people in, the experience is what sets us apart. Every appointment is tailored to the individual, from the consultation to the environment. My intention is always to help a woman walk out feeling lighter, more confident, and more like herself.

I am also the founder of Simplifying Beauty Academy, where I train licensed beauty professionals to become lash artists. The academy focuses on strong foundational skills, safe technique, and the client experience, along with the business knowledge needed to build a successful and sustainable career. I created the program because I know how confusing it can feel to enter this industry without guidance. I want my students to have clarity, confidence, and community as they grow.

What I am most proud of brand wise is our consistency. Everything we do centers around confidence, empowerment, and self-care without guilt. Whether someone comes in for a service or enrolls into the academy, I want them to feel supported and valued. Simplifying Beauty is not just about beauty services. It is about creating a space where every individual feels seen, understood, and taken care of.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are several ways people can work with me or support what I am building, and each one means a lot to me. If someone is looking for lash extensions, brow services, or a natural spray tan, they can visit Simplifying Beauty for a customized and relaxing experience. I always welcome new clients who value connection, calmness, and self-care.

For professionals in the beauty industry, Simplifying Beauty Academy is the best way to work with me. I offer hands-on training for licensed beauty professionals who want strong fundamentals, structure, and guidance as they begin their careers. I also love connecting with other industry professionals who want to partner on education, events, or community-building projects.

Collaboration is one of my favorite parts of being a small business owner. I enjoy partnering with other local businesses, women’s organizations, and community groups, especially when the goal is to support women, encourage confidence, or give back to the community.

For anyone who wants to support my work in simple ways, following Simplifying Beauty on social media, sharing my posts, or recommending my salon or academy to someone who might need what I offer truly makes an impact. Small gestures like that help more than people realize.

At the end of the day, I am always open to meaningful connections. Whether someone wants a service, education, a collaboration, or just wants to cheer on a local business, I am grateful for the support.
