Conversations with Claire Waldbart Kramer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Waldbart Kramer.

Hi Claire, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Alex Waldbart Florist has always been the family business. For me to work here wasn’t a real stretch-except I never intended on staying. Once I caught on to floral design, I was hooked.
First I designed the basics, roses, floral arrangements, and progressed to sympathy designs and weddings.
In 2002 I became owner of the flower shop. Fourth generation to own and operate our business.
Alex Waldbart established our business in 1872.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had an honest conversation with a restaurant owner once and I have always remembered what he said. “As a small business owner, one day you’re rich and the next day you’re poor”. Often this is true. Running a small business is not for the faint of heart. On the flipside of that, owning my family business has been the most rewarding thing I have done. Friends, family and old acquaintances know where to find me. Being a small part of weddings, new babies, the loss of loved ones, birthdays, anniversaries, and all the holidays is very meaningful.
For the most part of my 39 year tenure, my time at the flower shop has brought me satisfaction, pride, confidence and gratitude. This I believe comes from facing hard challenges. I lost both of my business partners within 3 years of each other, we had a devastating fire twenty years ago, eight years ago we were forced to move from the building we had been in for fifty years. and most recently, the Covid pandemic. My Dad used to say “tough times make tough people” I feel that.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a floral designer turned small business owner, I will always have a passion for flowers, and plants too. To hold in your hand the beauty of the earth and turn that into an incredibly wondrous floral piece is right up there with how Paul Cezanne must have felt when creating a master piece.
My specialty does not lie in one category, instead I specialize in creating all types of floral designs which touch people’s hearts. Emotion is what flowers are all about. I believe this is what sets my flower shop apart. I care deeply about the quality and longevity of fresh flowers we send to our customers.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?

People can partner with my shop in ways that go far beyond buying a bouquet.
