Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Walker.
Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always believed that leadership begins with service. My journey started long before real estate — as a U.S. Navy Veteran, I learned the value of discipline, teamwork, and integrity. Those same principles guided me when I transitioned into real estate over two decades ago, determined to build a business that was rooted in professionalism, inclusion, and community impact.
What began as a solo agent career evolved into something much bigger. Today, I’m the broker-owner of STL Buy & Sell, REALTORS®, a multi-state independent brokerage serving the greater St. Louis region. Our mission is simple but powerful — to help people move forward, whether that’s buying their first home, investing for their future, or growing their careers in real estate.
Along the way, I’ve sought every opportunity to grow and give back. I earned my Master’s degree in Real Estate from REALTOR® University, completed the NAR Leadership Academy, and served in multiple leadership roles — including Chair of NAR’s Diversity Committee, 2023 REALTOR® Party Community Engagement Liaison, and board member for both local and national REALTOR® organizations. Each role has given me a broader platform to advocate for fair housing, inclusive leadership, and professional excellence.
I also had the honor of serving six years on the Francis Howell School District Board of Education, where I learned firsthand how local decisions shape the lives of families and communities. That experience deepened my belief that good leadership means listening — and doing the work, even when it’s hard.
Through it all, I credit my success to a diversified business model, a commitment to continuous learning, and a heart for service. My proudest accomplishments aren’t the awards — though I’m grateful for each one — they’re the moments when a client closes on a home they thought was out of reach, or when an agent I’ve mentored steps into their own leadership role.
At the end of the day, I’m just as passionate about people as I am about property. Real estate has given me a platform to build community, elevate others, and keep growing — and that’s what keeps me excited every single day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every challenge has shaped me into the leader I am today.
When I started in real estate, I was a young mom balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship. There were moments when I questioned if I could really “do it all.” Building a business from scratch—especially as an independent broker.
There were times when deals fell apart, markets shifted, or leadership doors didn’t open easily. I’ve had to learn to create my own opportunities and sometimes build the table when I wasn’t invited to sit at one. That resilience, though, is what made me stronger and more determined to lift others as I climb.
One of the hardest lessons came when I stepped into leadership within the REALTOR® organization. Advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion can be uncomfortable work, especially when change challenges long-standing traditions. But I learned that progress requires courage..
Through it all, my faith, family, and community have kept me grounded. My husband and children have been my biggest supporters, cheering me on through late nights, campaign seasons, and big business milestones. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been meaningful — and every bump has pushed me to grow, serve, and lead with purpose.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
STL Buy & Sell, REALTORS® was built in the middle of a housing crisis, not a boom—and that reality still defines how we lead, serve, and succeed today. Founded during the 2008 housing crash, the brokerage was shaped by resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to service over trends or hype. We provide full-service residential brokerage, investor and portfolio services, property management, and advisory support, with a specialization in complex transactions that require strategy, experience, and steady leadership—particularly during market shifts and major life transitions. Because we’ve operated through multiple cycles, we don’t panic when conditions change; we plan. The brokerage is known for honesty, preparedness, and showing up consistently for clients and community alike, and what truly sets us apart is a diversified business model and leadership that extends beyond the office into local, state, and national REALTOR® advocacy, policy, and professional standards. We are most proud of building a brokerage that has endured, evolved, and empowered agents while remaining independently owned and deeply rooted in integrity. At our core, STL Buy & Sell, REALTORS® is built on service before self—where real estate is personal, education creates confidence, inclusion strengthens outcomes, and our promise is simple: we do the work, we tell the truth, and we stand with our clients long after the transaction closes.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about the St. Louis region is its strong sense of community. It’s a great place to raise a family, with an attainable cost of living that allows people to build meaningful lives and careers. I appreciate the history and authenticity of the region, while also recognizing the challenges, including fragmented municipalities and outdated narratives that don’t always reflect the progress being made. I care deeply about this area, and that belief in its continued growth is why I’ve chosen to invest my work, leadership, and service here.
