Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Sparks.
Hi Paige, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been an underdog-type personality, and I think that is why my employment law clients trust me so much because I have been in their shoes. I came from a family that lived paycheck to paycheck like many other families, and I started working my first job at 13. I have worked probably over 20+ jobs in various industries, and I have had up to four jobs at once. That was a crazy schedule to maintain!
After law school, I buckled down and put all my time into practicing employment law. Now I use social media to make free legal informational videos to try and help others. This is probably my favorite “job,” and it has given me a lot of amazing opportunities. I started making videos during the pandemic when everything was shutdown, and it really took off! Now, my opposing counsel and companies I sue are terrified of being mentioned in tik toks, which admittedly can be pretty fun for me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, which I used to resent. I have had to fight tooth-and-nail for everything and anything I get. Whether it is money, opportunities, or just being treated fairly in the court system – I have had to constantly fight my way through. Things have calmed down a lot now, and I think I had to go through all of that to handle next level legal proceedings. What used to ruin my day four years ago or stress me out beyond belief is now a blip on the radar of a normal day. I am very thankful for therapy and I go once a week to manage my stress levels, and this has made a huge difference in all aspects of my life. When you are in a stressful field, it is easy to spiral or catastrophize every little thing, so therapy has helped me learn new ways to think to avoid that.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sparks Legal?
I own a law firm called Sparks Legal. I almost exclusively practice in employment law, and I only represent employees against companies for claims like discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation. I have structured the firm to help as many people as we can, at no up-front cost. All of our work is on a contingency-fee basis, the firm fronts all costs, and expenses, and we get paid a percentage of any financial recovery from a case.
I also provide free consultations. The last thing I want to do is charge someone $400+ for a consultation when they were just fired and are already worrying about how to pay their mortgage and feed their kids, so this is why I am adamant about doing things this way.
I am only licensed in Missouri to practice law, so I have recently partnered with other lawyers throughout the country through LegalFlare to help refer people to similar, like-minded employment lawyers in other states.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have the best mentor ever – Stephanie Jones of Jones Family Law Group. She is an amazing attorney that has been there and done that, and we are also great friends!
My advice to find a mentor is to shoot your shot! Message like-minded people or people in your industry that you look up to and be honest that you are looking for friendship and mentorship. I also try to be involved in as many organizations as possible to make good connections there. If you start showing up places that are important to you, you can make friends with similar people that share common goals.
