Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Ritchie.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From “Different” to Driven: My Journey to Specializing in Adult Neurodivergence
For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to the neurodivergent community. Even before I had the clinical language for it, I felt a deep-seated connection to people who experienced the world differently. I felt “different” myself, navigating life with a perspective that didn’t always align with the standard script.
The Evolution of a Niche
The catalyst for starting my own private practice wasn’t just a career goal; it was a necessity for my own well-being. I realized I simply didn’t “fit” into typical, rigid workplace settings. Trying to escape burnout and create something that worked better for what I needed led me to create my own environment—one where I could operate with the honesty and authenticity I felt was missing elsewhere.
My path into private practice wasn’t a sudden pivot, but rather a purposeful “niching down.” Before launching my own practice, I spent years providing ADHD and Autism assessments for children. I loved that work, but as I moved into my own space, I began to see a different need emerging.
Adults started seeking me out for the same evaluations I had been doing for kids. They were looking for answers they hadn’t received decades ago. When I looked for specialized training to better serve them, I found a massive gap in the field.
Determined to provide excellence and high-quality, evidence-based care, I began training myself. The irony? In the process of learning how to identify neurodivergence in others, I realized I was looking into a mirror.
The Turning Point
Training myself in adult diagnostics led to my own ADHD diagnosis. It was the ultimate “game changer.” Suddenly, the challenges I had faced and the “differentness” I had felt my whole life were validated. It wasn’t a deficit; it was a different type of wiring.
This realization shifted my work from a career to a calling. I found my community among neurodivergent adults, and I realized that my ability to validate their lived experience—while providing high-level clinical expertise—was where I could make the most impact.
A Life Mission in St. Louis and Beyond
Through this work, I have seen firsthand the immense challenges that individuals and families face when trying to navigate the healthcare system. There is a staggering gap in care for neurodivergent adults, particularly in the St. Louis area. Finding services that are neuro-affirming, effective, and tailored to how a specific brain works shouldn’t feel like an impossible maze, yet for many, it is.
This has become so much more than a job; it is my life mission. My values of education, advocacy, and practical strategies are the pillars of everything I do. I am committed to:
• Educating professionals and families on how neurodivergence presents in high-functioning individuals and neuroaffirming treatment strategies.
• Advocating for a world where neurodivergence is seen as a natural human difference not a deficit.
• Providing Practical Strategies so that people can leave my office not just with a diagnosis, but with strategies that can improve their life immediately.
The more I connect with my clients and hear their stories, the more “on fire” I feel to keep moving forward. My mission continues to grow and expand every single day as I learn more about this process. I’m not just here to provide a service; I’m here to help create not just a space, but a larger community, where you can finally come as you are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Behind the Scenes: The “Beautiful Mess” of a Neurodivergent Business Owner
When people ask how I got here, I often tell them that my practice, Gateway Behavioral Health, was born out of a mix of necessity and a bit of a “brain on fire” moment. I launched this business during the height of the pandemic—a time when the world was upside down, and for someone with then-undiagnosed ADHD, the lack of traditional structure felt both terrifying and strangely liberating.
The Challenge of “High-Functioning”
My journey to my own diagnosis was an uphill battle. Even as a psychologist, I struggled to find qualified providers who truly understood high-functioning ADHD. The clinical world often misses those of us who have learned to mask well—the ones who appear successful on paper but are running on a “dangerously low battery” internally.
This experience opened my eyes to the barriers my clients face daily:
• Outdated Perspectives: A lack of providers who recognize how neurodivergence presents in adults and women.
• Systemic Roadblocks: Outdated healthcare policies and poor insurance reimbursement rates that significantly decrease access to care.
• The Care Gap: In the St. Louis area, there is a staggering lack of neuro-affirming services, creating a “silent crisis” for those trying to navigate their own mental health.
Balancing the Burnout: Mom, Owner, Advocate
My “why” is also sitting at my dinner table. I am a mother to two neurodivergent children, and my daily life is a constant exercise in balancing my own mental health with the needs of a neuro-diverse family.
As a business owner with ADHD, I live in the tension of wanting to do everything—to advocate, to educate, to change the system—while having a limited amount of time and energy. I know what it’s like to feel like you have 50 tabs open in your brain at once. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a life mission born from the trenches of my own living room.
Creating a Space Without the Mask
Seeing these gaps firsthand—both personally and professionally—is what keeps me “on fire” to move forward. My goal is to use my values of Excellence, Empowerment, and Inclusivity to bridge these gaps. I want to provide:
• Practical Strategies: Tools that actually work for a neurodivergent brain, not just “typical” advice.
• Education and Advocacy: Training professionals to see what they’re currently missing in healthcare settings.
• A Safe Space: An environment where you can drop the mask and come as you are.
I am learning more every day, and as I do, my mission continues to expand. I’m not just building a practice; I’m building a community where we can all stop trying to fit into a round hole and start celebrating our unique wiring.
