Community Highlights: Meet Brandon Martens of Martens Painting and Home Remodeling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Martens.

Hi Brandon , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always known I wanted to work for myself. Right after graduating high school, I didn’t take the traditional route—I went straight into building something of my own. I started the business with just power washing, keeping it simple and focusing on getting my foot in the door, learning how to deal with customers, and figuring out how to actually run jobs from start to finish.

From there, I grew it step by step. About a year in, I added painting, which naturally tied into the type of work we were already doing. Another year later, I expanded into flooring, and that’s when things really started to take off. As we kept growing, I saw the opportunity to offer more complete solutions, so we continued expanding into drywall, trim, and eventually full home remodeling.

A big turning point was getting more involved with real estate investors. That shifted the business from just doing smaller jobs to handling larger-scale projects and full property rehabs. It forced me to level up quickly—not just in the quality of work, but in systems, pricing, managing crews, and running the business side of things.

Today, we’re doing full remodels and running around a $100K/month operation at 24 years old. But more importantly, we’ve built a company that people trust—a one-stop shop where clients know they can come to us for anything from a simple paint job to a full renovation.

It hasn’t been perfect, and there’s been a lot of learning along the way, but that steady growth—adding one service at a time and getting better with each step—is really what got us to where we are today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all—it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s the reality for anyone building something from the ground up.

Early on, one of the biggest challenges was just figuring everything out at once—pricing jobs correctly, managing time, handling customers, and actually doing the work. It’s easy to underbid jobs when you’re trying to stay competitive, and that can hurt you fast if you’re not careful. I had to learn pretty quickly how to price based on real numbers, not just what I thought sounded right.

Another big struggle was scaling. It’s one thing to do the work yourself, but it’s a completely different challenge to build a team and trust other people to represent your company the same way you would. Finding reliable employees, managing schedules, and keeping quality consistent takes a lot of trial and error.

There’s also the pressure that comes with running a business—cash flow, making payroll, covering materials, and making sure every job stays profitable. That’s something most people don’t see from the outside, but it’s a constant responsibility.

I’ve also had to navigate business changes, like restructuring and rebranding, which comes with its own set of challenges. But those moments force you to get clear on your vision and what you want the company to become.

At the end of the day, the struggles have honestly been the biggest learning experiences. They’ve helped me tighten up my systems, improve how I run jobs, and become more confident in my decisions. It’s not perfect, but every challenge has made the business stronger.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Martens Painting & Home Remodeling is a full-service contracting company based in the St. Louis and St. Charles area, specializing in high-quality residential renovations from start to finish. We handle everything from painting, drywall, and flooring to full kitchen and bathroom remodels, making us a true one-stop shop for homeowners and real estate investors.

What sets us apart is our ability to simplify the entire renovation process. Instead of juggling multiple contractors, our clients work with one reliable team that manages every phase of the project—efficiently, professionally, and with clear communication. We pride ourselves on fast turnaround times, clean workmanship, and delivering results that are both visually impressive and built to last.

We’ve built a strong reputation working with real estate investors by offering straightforward pricing, scalable crews, and the ability to handle large-volume projects like full property rehabs, rent-ready turnovers, and interior/exterior upgrades. At the same time, we bring that same level of care and detail to homeowners looking to transform their space.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of being known as dependable and easy to work with. In an industry where delays and poor communication are common, we’ve made it a priority to stand out through consistency, transparency, and professionalism. Our clients know they can count on us to show up, follow through, and deliver exactly what we promise.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: provide high-quality work, streamline the renovation experience, and build long-term relationships with every client we serve.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Honestly, a lot of it comes down to putting yourself in the right rooms and not being afraid to reach out. In the beginning, I didn’t wait around for a “perfect mentor” to show up—I learned by connecting with people who were already doing what I wanted to do, especially other contractors and real estate investors. Those relationships ended up being just as valuable as any formal mentorship.

What’s worked best for me is being involved in investor groups and surrounding myself with people who are actively buying, flipping, and managing properties. That’s where the real opportunities and knowledge come from. Instead of just trying to sell to them, I focused on building real relationships—being reliable, showing up, doing solid work, and staying consistent. That naturally opens doors.

I’ve also found that you don’t always need one single mentor. You can learn different things from different people—one person might be great at sales, another at operations, another at scaling a team. If you stay observant and ask the right questions, you can piece together a lot of valuable insight.

As far as networking in general, consistency is everything. Staying active on social media, posting your work daily, and showing proof of what you do builds credibility over time. People start to recognize your name, and that leads to more conversations, referrals, and opportunities.

If I had one piece of advice, it would be this—add value first. Don’t just reach out asking for help. Show people you’re serious, show your work, and be someone they actually want to be around or do business with. That’s what’s made the biggest difference for me.
