Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Bloomer.
Hi Steve, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My grandfather and his two brothers built Skyview Drive In and it opened on July 8, 1949. It is one of the oldest drive in theaters in the US and it is probably the oldest that has been operated by the same family.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The eighties were rough because of home video that stole a lot of business from all theaters.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have had a lot of different careers. I was a teacher for six years after I graduated from college. I then became an insurance agent for New York Life and did that for five years. I had always wanted to work in the theaters. We had 19 indoor and drive in theaters. I got my chance when the warehouse manager passed away and I had experience working there. After nine months working as the warehouse manager and relief manager at a couple of our theaters, I became the general manager for all of the theaters. I did that for nine years and then left to work as a highly successful agent for Sentry Insurance Company. When my father passed away, I became an owner of the movie theaters. We sold off all of the other theater properties except for Skyview which I now manage.
