Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Plair.
Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Black Girl Motivation was born from both my personal journey and my experiences as a mother, entrepreneur, and woman navigating spaces where I often didn’t feel represented. As a Black woman working in the tech industry and raising four daughters, I realized how important it was for Black girls and women to have spaces that reminded them of their worth, beauty, strength, and potential.
I created Black Girl Motivation because I wanted my daughters and women around the world to see daily reminders that they are enough exactly as they are. What started as a passion project rooted in empowerment and representation has grown into a global platform that includes a mobile app, motivational content, journals, coloring books, music, and a supportive community designed to inspire confidence, healing, self love, and growth.
My mission has always been bigger than motivation alone. I wanted to create something that truly speaks to the experiences of Black girls and women and helps them feel seen, heard, valued, and empowered in every stage of life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and I think that’s the reality of entrepreneurship that people don’t always see. Building Black Girl Motivation has required a lot of faith, resilience, and the ability to adapt. One of the biggest challenges has been funding. As an independently funded platform, there were times when I had a huge vision but limited resources, so I had to learn how to build strategically and make the most of what I had.
I’ve also faced challenges with development and technology. Working in tech helped me understand the industry, but technology is constantly evolving, and staying on top of trends, tools, and user expectations can feel like a full time job on its own. There were moments where things didn’t work the way I envisioned, features had to be reworked, or I had to completely pivot based on what my audience actually needed versus what I originally imagined.
That has probably been one of the biggest lessons for me: learning to listen, pivot, and let go when necessary. Sometimes as a founder, you become attached to your own ideas, but I’ve learned that growth requires flexibility. Black Girl Motivation has evolved over time because I’ve been willing to move with the needs of the community instead of forcing my own vision. Every challenge has taught me something, and each obstacle has helped shape Black Girl Motivation into what it is today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Black Girl Motivation. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Black Girl Motivation is a global empowerment brand and platform created to inspire, uplift, and support Black girls and women through every stage of life. What started as a mobile app has evolved into a growing brand that includes motivational content, AI powered support, guided journals, coloring books, music, and a community centered around confidence, healing, self love, and personal growth.
What sets Black Girl Motivation apart is that it was created from lived experiences and with intentionality. I didn’t want to create surface level inspiration. I wanted to create a safe space where Black girls and women genuinely feel seen, heard, represented, and valued. Every product, message, and experience is designed with authenticity and purpose at the center.
We specialize in creating empowering and relatable experiences that combine motivation, wellness, creativity, and technology in a way that feels accessible and personal. Through our mobile app, users receive daily motivational messages and access to AI powered support designed to encourage and uplift them at any time of day. We’ve also expanded into guided gratitude journals, affirmation coloring books, music, and other wellness inspired products that encourage reflection, creativity, healing, and self care.
What I want readers to know most is that Black Girl Motivation is more than a brand, it’s a movement and a reminder that Black girls and women deserve spaces created with them in mind. Everything we create is rooted in empowerment, representation, and helping women pour back into themselves unapologetically. I’m most proud of the impact and community we’ve built and the stories from women and girls who say Black Girl Motivation helped them feel more confident, inspired, and supported during difficult moments in their lives.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about St. Louis is the sense of community and resilience. There are so many talented, creative, and driven people here who genuinely want to see each other succeed. St. Louis has a strong culture of entrepreneurship and pride, and I’ve seen firsthand how supportive the community can be when people come together to uplift one another. I also appreciate being able to build and grow my brand while staying connected to my roots, family, and the community that helped shape me.
What I like least is that St. Louis can still feel very divided at times, and I think there’s still a lot of work to do when it comes to creating equal opportunities, collaboration, and visibility across different communities. I also think local entrepreneurs, creatives, and small businesses, especially businesses led by women and minorities, could benefit from more investment and support. At the same time, I believe those challenges are also what motivate so many of us to keep pushing forward and creating change.
