Today we’d like to introduce you to Darby Wright.
Hi Darby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up competing.
Riding and showing hunters and jumpers. A full-blown, canter-down-the-school-hallway horse girl. Horses weren’t just a hobby, they were my entire world. Both of my parents rode, my mom built her life in the industry, and I rode as many horses in a day as I possibly could. I never got tired of it… and honestly, I still haven’t.
Fast forward to high school. I was still riding almost every day when I decided to try out for the swim team. I ended up swimming for three years alongside strength training and hit a 275 lb back squat as a junior. Somewhere in there, I unknowingly fell in love with fitness.
But there was always a certain look I felt like I had to chase in the equitation ring. And even though squatting 275 at sixteen didn’t exactly make me a size two, I still thought being smaller was the goal. I was successful as a rider, but that desire to look a certain way lingered in the background.
In college, if I wasn’t riding or working on graphic design and photography projects, I was in the gym. Training became part of my personality.
The horse girl that lifts heavy circles.
In 2022, everything shifted. I hired my first coach and started working for 1st Phorm, diving headfirst into nutrition, macros, hypertrophy training, and eventually prepping for my first bodybuilding show. I fell in love with the competition of another sport — but after the show, I wasn’t mentally prepared for the “now what?” feeling that followed.
I got stuck in a binge and restrict cycle. Food consumed my thoughts. I was terrified of gaining weight.
My rock bottom hit one night about two and a half months post-show. I had eaten on plan all day but was starving. I broke down on my kitchen floor crying, telling my boyfriend, “I’m so hungry and I’m out of macros.” My calories were low, my hunger was high, and I felt completely stuck.
I felt like an imposter. Like a fraud as an athlete. Like someone who couldn’t even control her own hunger. And yet, I still loved competing. I didn’t blame bodybuilding. But I knew something had to change. I knew I had to heal. Not just my hormones, but my relationship with food and with myself. I had to show the younger version of me that strength is in and skinny is out.
And the truth? I still have hard days. Healing isn’t linear. Growth isn’t perfect. But I tell myself daily that I am a work in progress, doing my best, and every day has its own version of success.
Today, I’m blessed to serve others through the experiences and knowledge that shaped me into who I am. With the love of my life by my side, I’m building my business and we’re building our dream life together.
And one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned?
It’s okay to ask for help.
Whatever you’re walking through right now, there is a community that will welcome you with open arms. You are not alone, even in your darkest seasons. In due season you will reap, if you do not give up.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This entire coaching journey has had its ups and downs, but the ups win by a mile. The biggest obstacle has been learning how to balance wanting to help as many people as possible without pouring from an empty cup. I have had to learn that rest is not something you earn after burnout; it is necessary in every season if you want to show up well for yourself and the people you serve.
I think another big lesson has been realizing that you cannot build something meaningful alone. Having amazing friends, mentors, and a strong circle has made all the difference. The people around me have encouraged me, challenged me, prayed for me, and reminded me of who I am when I needed it most.
It has not always been smooth, but it has absolutely been worth it. Every hard season has taught me how to lead better, serve better, and keep building The Built Wright Method with more purpose.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Built Wright Method, a coaching business focused on helping people build strength, confidence, structure, and a body they feel proud of without falling into extremes.
I specialize in strength training, physique development, fat loss, lifestyle transformation, and helping clients create routines they can actually stick to. My approach is structured, honest, and highly individualized. I’m not here to hand someone a random workout PDF and call it coaching. I want to understand their goals, their lifestyle, their struggles, their schedule, and what has held them back before so we can build something that actually works for them.
I’m known for being direct but supportive. I care deeply about my clients, but I’m also going to tell them the truth. I want them to win, and sometimes that means helping them stop overcomplicating everything, stop quitting on themselves, and start showing up with more consistency.
What I’m most proud of is watching people realize they are capable of more than they thought. Yes, the physical transformation matters, but the real win is when someone becomes more confident, disciplined, and in control of their life. That’s the part that changes everything.
What sets The Built Wright Method apart is that it is not just about macros and workouts. It is about building the person. I combine training, nutrition, accountability, education, mindset, and real-life strategy so clients are not just following a plan — they are learning how to become the version of themselves they keep saying they want to be.
My coaching is personal, intentional, and built around long-term growth. I don’t believe in quick fixes. I believe in doing things the right way, with structure, grit, faith, and consistency — because when you build it right, it lasts.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising most people may not know is that I actually went to school for graphic design. Before coaching, I had a creative background rooted in design, branding, and visual storytelling.
I think that creative eye has carried over into The Built Wright Method in a big way.
I care about the details, how something looks, how it feels, how it is communicated, and how people connect to it. Coaching is science and structure, but it is also presentation, communication, and understanding people.
That background helps me build a brand and coaching experience that feels intentional, personal, and polished. I do not just want clients to get a plan. I want them to feel seen, understood, and part of something that was built with purpose.
