Today we’d like to introduce you to David Stein.
Hi David , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
originally out of high school I purchased a restaurant in Chesterfield called Classic Red Hots, and I owned and ran that business for about two years. Then I decided I wanted to go back to school so I went to Webster University and I got a bachelors degree in audio production. After I got my degree, I got an internship at Phat Buddha in downtown St. Louis probably the most well-known studio in the city. I worked there for about six years. I then got into a bad accident when I was traveling down in Mexico and it took me about eight months to be able to walk again, so I wasn’t really working during that period. After I recovered, I no longer worked at Phat Buddha, I got hired at a studio in Alton Illinois called Lighthouse Sounds. I have since been working there and continue to do so to this day. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many artists, including Kevin Gates., Lil Baby, Tee Grizzley, Nelly, and hundreds of local artists to St. Louis.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been smooth at all actually I’ve always struggled with mental health issues if you compound that with the constant hustle of trying to stay relevant and make a living working as an audio engineer in a market that is so saturated it’s pretty tough. I also stated that I had a very terrible injury in an accident that I had while I was traveling to Mexico with my family that put a huge burden in my way, but thankfully I was able to recover fully and I’m happy and healthy now.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I mainly specialize in hip-hop pop in R&B vocals, but I have worked in all kinds of different genres of music and podcasting and sound for video. I pretty much done it all when it comes to the audio world. I think I’m known for my ability to connect with the artists that I work with and I’m able to give them the sound that they are looking for I love to get involved personally with each artist and cater to their vision. I’m not the one to just sit there and collect money by pressing play and not giving my feedback. I’m just proud of what I’ve accomplished. I worked my ass off to get the degree and I never really thought that I could do what I did as a career especially not for over a decade now. I think what sets me apart from others is that I genuinely care about the work that I do and I believe it shows in the end product and I go above and beyond for every client that I work with and make sure that they are satisfied with the end product. I feel like I have my own signature sound in my mix and master as well..
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Oh man, I have so many. I just was very blessed and had an amazing family and a wonderful childhood with so many friends and I played every sport you could think of and traveled a lot with my family. I just think spending time with my family and friends was the highlight of my childhood there’s way too many memories that were so awesome for me to even begin to try to choose one.
