Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura-Lee Whitelaw.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story has never been a straight line—and looking back, I am grateful for that.
Before founding Legacy Real Estate Photography & Media in 2021, I spent nearly two decades in the corporate world. I built a career, led teams, navigated change, and believed that experience, education, and a strong work ethic would always open the next door.
Then that chapter ended unexpectedly.
I found myself in unfamiliar territory. Despite nearly two decades of experience, a strong professional background, and applying for position after position, I could not get an interview.
That season challenged my confidence more than I expected. When you have spent years building a career and suddenly find yourself wondering whether anyone still sees your value, it can shake something deep inside you. But that season also forced me to ask a different question:
What if the next chapter wasn’t about finding another place to fit—but creating something of my own?
Then I saw a Craigslist ad for a real estate photographer.
I had always loved photography, and having previously been a licensed real estate agent in California, I understood something important: photographing a home is not simply about creating beautiful images. You are representing someone’s largest asset, an agent’s reputation, and often a family navigating a major life transition.
I remember thinking, “I can do that.”
So I did.
The experience was far from perfect, but it gave me something incredibly valuable: clarity. I saw what was missing—training, systems, consistency, communication, and a deeper sense of responsibility to the people being served. Instead of discouraging me, it planted a seed.
I began to imagine what I would build differently.
A turning point came during a trip to Texas for a horse clinic. I reached out to the owner of an established real estate media company I admired and simply asked if he would be willing to share some of his experience.
That simple request became a four-hour conversation with his team.
Their generosity, knowledge, and encouragement restored something in me that had been shaken: belief in myself.
On the 14-hour drive home, Legacy began to take shape. The name. The colors. The vision. Even the logo, inspired by my beloved Quarter Horse, Maverick.
Somewhere along that highway, I realized I was not simply building a photography business. I was building something rooted in relationships, excellence, purpose, and lasting impact.
Since then, Legacy has grown into a full-service real estate and brand media company serving clients across Missouri and Illinois through photography, cinematic video, drone media, 3D tours, floor plans, branding content, commercial media, and customized visual solutions.
But the heart of the company has never changed.
We believe people come before projects. Trust must be earned and honored. Excellence is not simply about the final image—it is reflected in how we communicate, how we show up, how we care for our clients, and how seriously we take the responsibility of representing their reputation.
I am especially proud that Legacy has grown organically through relationships, referrals, consistency, responsiveness, and genuine care. Our clients are not simply looking for beautiful images. They trust us to show up professionally, care for their clients, protect the reputation they have worked hard to build, and guide them toward what will best serve their goals.
And recently, this journey reached a milestone that carries more meaning for me than I can easily put into words.
Legacy was invited to become a contributing partner photographer for St. Louis Real Producers magazine.
Partnership with the magazine is by invitation only, and becoming part of that community was a goal I quietly held from the beginning of my journey. I admired what the magazine represented—the relationships, the excellence, and the community of leading real estate professionals it serves.
I hoped that perhaps one day Legacy might earn the opportunity to be part of it.
Today, we are.
There is something deeply humbling about the full circle of that moment.
There was a season when I could not get an interview.
Today, I have been invited to contribute my work, my perspective, and my company’s talents to a respected publication serving some of the top real estate professionals in the St. Louis market.
I do not share that as a statement of arrival. I share it with profound gratitude.
Because I remember the uncertainty. I remember questioning my value. I remember not knowing what the next chapter would look like. And I remember the people who generously gave their time, shared their knowledge, opened doors, trusted me with opportunities, referred my company, encouraged me, and believed in what I was building.
This recognition belongs, in part, to every person who became part of that journey.
Today, I am still building. Still learning. Still evolving.
I have learned that resilience is not about avoiding hard seasons. It is about allowing them to shape you without letting them define the limits of what comes next.
And perhaps one of the most important lessons I have carried forward is the one that began with that simple request in Texas:
It never hurts to ask.
One conversation can restore confidence.
One relationship can change a direction.
One unexpected opportunity can become the beginning of something you could not yet see.
Sometimes, the door that never opens is the very thing that pushes you to build your own.
That is how Legacy began.
And with deep gratitude for how far we have come, I still believe we are only at the beginning.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. But I have come to believe that some of the hardest chapters of our lives shape us in ways success alone never could.
When my nearly two-decade corporate career ended unexpectedly, I truly believed my experience, education, leadership background, and work ethic would open another door. Instead, I sent out resume after resume and could not get an interview. Not one. I was qualified for many of the positions and overqualified for others, yet I felt invisible. That season deeply challenged my confidence and forced me to question who I was when the career I had known for so long was suddenly gone.
Then came the challenge of starting over.
I did not begin Legacy with investors, a large team, or a perfect roadmap. I began with a Craigslist ad for a real estate photography position and the thought, “I can do that.” What followed was a steep learning curve. I had to learn not only the craft of real estate photography, but how to build systems, price services, lead a team, manage technology, create a consistent client experience, and grow without losing the heart behind why I started. The earliest experience gave me very little training or foundation, but it also showed me exactly what was missing—and what I wanted to build differently.
There were financial uncertainties, mistakes, long days, sleepless nights, and more moments of self-doubt than I can count. And while I was building a business, life continued to bring its own challenges. I have faced breast cancer twice, ongoing health challenges, caregiving responsibilities for my husband following his stroke, and profound personal loss. There have been seasons when I was carrying far more privately than most people around me knew, while still trying to show up with consistency and care for my clients, my team, and the people who trusted me.
One of the hardest lessons has been learning that resilience is not the same as carrying everything alone. For much of my life, I believed strength meant pushing harder, figuring it out, and continuing no matter the personal cost. Leadership has taught me that real strength also requires asking for help, building the right team, creating systems, trusting others, and recognizing that sustainable growth cannot depend on one person carrying everything.
As Legacy has grown, another challenge has been protecting what made it special in the first place. Growth matters, but never at the expense of relationships, trust, dependability, intentionality, or excellence. Those values are the foundation of how we serve and how we lead.
The road has not been smooth. There have been detours I never would have chosen and losses I would never wish on anyone. But those experiences have taught me to pivot, to remain teachable, to ask for help, to extend grace, and to keep moving forward even when I cannot see the entire path.
I have learned that sometimes the obstacle is not standing in the way of your next chapter. Sometimes it is what leads you there.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Your Work
I am the Founder and CEO of Legacy Real Estate Photography & Media, a full-service real estate and brand media company serving clients across Missouri and Illinois. We specialize in professional photography, cinematic video, drone photography and video, 3D tours, interactive and schematic floor plans, virtual staging, twilight imagery, branding and headshot photography, commercial media, and customized visual storytelling solutions.
But if you ask me what I really do, my answer goes beyond photography.
I help people and businesses be seen.
My professional background spans nearly two decades in the corporate world, with experience in leadership, business operations, marketing, sales, client relationships, problem-solving, and risk assessment. I was also a licensed real estate agent in California. That combination shapes how I approach every client and every project today. I do not look at media as an isolated deliverable. I look at the larger picture: Who are we trying to reach? What story needs to be told? What emotion should someone feel? What opportunity are we trying to create? What could put the client’s reputation at risk? And how can we help protect and strengthen the trust they have worked so hard to earn?
That is a significant part of what sets Legacy apart.
We are known for how we show up. Prepared. Responsive. Dependable. Intentional. We listen before we recommend. We guide rather than simply execute. We look for potential challenges before they become problems. And we treat every property, brand, relationship, and opportunity as something entrusted to our care. Those principles are embedded in Legacy’s values of people-centered relationships, dependability, intentionality, excellence, impact, stewardship, and growth.
For our real estate clients, we believe exceptional media should do more than market one home. It should strengthen the agent’s professional reputation, demonstrate the level of care they bring to their clients, and create opportunities long after the property has changed hands. Our ideal clients are not simply looking for someone with a camera; they are looking for a trusted partner who will protect their reputation, treat their clients with care, and help them make thoughtful decisions about how to present each property.
We also serve builders, contractors, developers, investors, commercial properties, and businesses that understand visual media is part of a much larger strategy. As Legacy has grown, so has our work in branding, headshots, commercial media, and customized solutions built around a client’s goals rather than forcing them into a predetermined package.
I am deeply committed to innovation, including thoughtfully incorporating AI-powered tools when they genuinely improve storytelling, efficiency, or the client experience. But I am equally protective of the human side of our work. My philosophy is simple: human-first and technology-enabled. Technology should strengthen creativity and connection, never replace them.
What am I most proud of?
The trust we have earned. And the team we have built.
I am proud when a client gives us access to a property and knows we will care for it responsibly. I am proud when someone refers a colleague because they trust how we will represent them. I am proud when clients return again and again—not simply because they value the media, but because they value the relationship, responsiveness, guidance, and consistency behind it.
And I am incredibly proud of my team.
My team spans multiple countries, cultures, and areas of expertise, yet they show up for something greater than a paycheck. They show up for the vision of Legacy. They believe in what we are building. They care about our clients. They care about one another. They understand that whether their role is behind the camera, in editing, quality control, operations, client care, or marketing, their work contributes to an experience much larger than any one person. Legacy was intentionally built as a place where people feel supported, valued, and connected to meaningful work—and I believe that when we take care of one another, that care naturally flows outward to everyone we serve.
I am also proud that giving back is built into our business model. A portion of our work supports charitable organizations, and our clients are given a voice in where part of that impact goes. For me, success has never been only about revenue or growth. It is about the ripple effect we create through the people we serve, the team we support, and the communities we touch.
At the heart of everything is one belief:
Legacy is not a photography company that happens to care about relationships. Legacy is a relationship company that happens to deliver world-class visual media.
That is what sets us apart. And protecting that belief as we continue to grow is one of the responsibilities I value most.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Advice for Those Just Starting Out
The most important advice I would give anyone starting a business is simple:
Don’t go it alone.
Entrepreneurship can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life, but it can also feel like a roller coaster. One day, you are filled with confidence and excitement about what you are building. The next, you may be questioning a decision, worrying about finances, navigating an unexpected challenge, or wondering whether you are moving in the right direction.
I wish I had understood earlier how important it is to intentionally surround yourself with people who understand that ride. Find like-minded people in your industry. Connect with other entrepreneurs. Seek out mentors, coaches, and trusted peers who will guide you, challenge you, share what they have learned, and hold you accountable. Find people with whom you can be honest—people who understand both the excitement and the weight of building something of your own.
My own journey changed because I was willing to ask for guidance. During a trip to Texas, I reached out to the owner of an established real estate media company I admired and simply asked if he would be willing to share some of his experience. That request turned into a four-hour conversation with his team. Their generosity, perspective, and encouragement helped restore my confidence and played a meaningful role in what eventually became Legacy. What makes that story even more special is that it did not end with one conversation. Over the years, we became friends, and we continue to connect annually—sharing ideas, challenges, lessons, and the realities of growing and leading a business.
That experience taught me something I still carry with me today:
It never hurts to ask.
The tribe I have around me today has been indispensable to both my personal and professional growth. We meet weekly via Zoom and make it a priority to connect face-to-face once a year. Over time, these people have become far more than professional peers. They have become friends, comrades, accountability partners, and truly, my tribe. They are the people who celebrate the wins, challenge my thinking, ask the hard questions, hold me accountable, and understand the difficult days without requiring a long explanation.
There is something incredibly validating about hearing another entrepreneur say, “Yes, I have been there too.” Sometimes you need guidance. Sometimes you need perspective. Sometimes you need someone to remind you that one difficult day does not define the future of what you are building.
You do not have to know everything before you begin. You do not need every system perfected or every answer figured out. But I deeply believe you need people around you who will help you grow, remain grounded, and keep moving forward. Relationships, continuous growth, feedback, and learning from others remain central to how I lead Legacy today.
Build your business, but build your community alongside it.
The journey will have climbs, sudden drops, unexpected turns, and moments that take your breath away. Having people beside you who truly understand the ride does not remove the challenges—but it can make all the difference in how you move through them.
