Conversations with Venus Da Kid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus Da Kid.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out like any Gen-Z kid, bored and adventurous. What started as me just goofing around on my iPad late at night utilizing GarageBand, turned into a lifelong passion of music creation and personal development. Through the years, I dealt with hurdles and copious amounts of grief. Music immediately became the outlet I ran to that would allow me to express myself in any way I saw fit. With time, I experimented with different sounds and moods via YouTube beats. I’ve gained lifelong friendships and skills through former organizations like Saint Louis Story Stitchers, which gave me my first go around at performing in front of a live audience, and provided me insight on myself as a person. I’m now solely focused on building infrastructure and immersive world building via my brand, philosophy, and album [Be Yourself Or Die.] It’s a contradiction in terms of, being yourself is not a box. You can be and feel one thing and then the very next second your perception shifts, which is why I believe in being yourself unapologetically while also being aware of the consequences that come with being yourself because not everyone is gonna like YOU. You are the star of your own movie, your the director and the star. So live like it, and enjoy the music while your at it

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road would be an understatement, to say the least. In my short time here on Earth (only 20), I’ve experienced what many of us have 10x over: constant death, shitty friendships, misconstrued feelings, betrayal at the highest degree, and learning to navigate adulthood and the constant stigmas and unnecessary work that come with independent artistry all at once.

But I keep going because, like I said, I’m the star of my movie. Why allow a side character whose only purpose is furthering the plot to fuck up my flow?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the root of everything, I’d consider myself an independent rap artist and aspiring entrepreneur. I create music that reflects my life experiences, my aspirations, and my day to day fuck boi shit that consists of doing absolutely nothing but smoking weed and being on FaceTime with my friends.

Alternative rap, similar to artists such as XXXTentacion, Chief Keef, Lil Uzi Vert, and Capital STEEZ, is what I’m most accustomed to doing and have started to become known for. But I wouldn’t put myself strictly in those boxes, as I’ve experimented with hella different sounds and ideas over the years.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a song or an image.. it’s the fact that I’ve been able to be myself unapologetically across the board in recent years compared to previous. Whether it’s my music, live shows, merchandise, or the philosophy behind [Be Yourself Or Die.] everything comes from a real place. I think what sets me apart is that I’m not interested in kissing the next person’s ass. I’d rather build a world that reflects who I am and attract people who genuinely connect with it than become somebody else for attention.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with me by being genuine, building real relationships, and actually giving a fuck. I don’t work well with people who keep everything strictly business and cold. I’m far too emotional for that, and I think the best art comes from real connections between people.

If you’d like to collaborate, you can reach me via email at venusdakid@gmail.com
or on Instagram @venusdakid.

If you’d like to support me, the best thing you can do is listen to the music and tell me what you honestly did or didn’t like in a constructive, conversational manner. I’m always trying to grow. And of course, support the brand and philosophy: Be Yourself Or Die.
