Rising Stars: Meet Sara Brill of St Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Brill.

Sara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a nurse for 17 years. Took time off to have children and during that time I became a Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach. My work is all about health and wellness. I see patients in their home and teach them simple exercises and food swaps. This may be because they are managing a chronic health condition or because they are becoming frail and in danger of a fall. I incorporate active listening techniques, behavior modification, and simple things they can do to stay independent as long as possible.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Traditional nursing roles were excellent for learning but led to burn-out and a desire to find something that worked better. After I became a personal trainer, I worked with many types of people in a gym setting but still felt that I was missing pieces of my calling. The work I do now fits me. I can see a person from multiple perspectives and provide the help that they actually need instead of a prescriptive solution that works for only a brief time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m really proud of the relationships I have with my patients. I’m not someone who clocks out at the end of the day. My patients are all important to me and I have a feeling of well being when they see improvement in their daily life.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Many of the mistakes I have made were devastating at the time. I’m a person with a strong sense of justice and a need to leave people and situations better than I found them. It drives me to improve myself constantly. I read everything; articles, books, textbooks on a wide variety of subjects.
