Today we’d like to introduce you to Birgit DeVae.
Hi Birgit, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been around photography most of my life. I began in front of the camera when I started modeling when I was twelve. After launching my first business, a children’s clothing brand called Johnny Banana Co, I completely immersed myself in the world of photography. I picked up a camera to learn to capture my own product shoots and instead fell in love with my camera and all things photography.
My family means everything to me and life goes way too fast. Photography helps to slow it down, to freeze all the small moments, and my passion is capturing all of those moments both mine and others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So many creatives and I think ever photographer has probably dealt with imposter syndrome at some point. It is too easy to get lost in trying to please others and follow the latest trends. With social media it becomes almost impossible to not compare your work to other’s.
I tackle this by leaning into my own vision and recognizing that my eyes and my view is unique and unlike anyone else could possibly ever have. That individuality is unique to all of us and it is the magic that sets everyone apart.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in high-end weddings. I work mostly in Chicago and St Louis, travel frequently around the midwest and adore distant travel as well! My focus is on editorial and documentary wedding photography, blending those real and unscripted moments with editorial and fashion focused images.
I lean into off camera flash and the majority of my work focuses on an editorial-style look. I call upon my modeling and fashion background and incorporate those experiences every time I am behind my camera.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk is essential to grow both personally and in artistry. I frequently set up curated shoots for myself to focus on a particular shooting style, switch up my gear, and experiment with new lighting and techniques. I find these creative shoots so beneficial as I am in control of every element, while also pushing and allowing myself to reach out my comfort zone and expand my artistic eye!
