Daily Inspiration: Meet Shantay Caver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shantay Caver.

Hi Shantay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Shantay Caver, I was a teenage mother and had my first child at 18 years old. I was young and still residing at home with my mother and decided to moved out of her house when I was 19 into my own apartment. I was working odd jobs to care for my son and became employed with the state of Missouri at he age of 25 is when I had my daughter. While working and paying bills and caring for my two children is when I decided to enroll in college because I wanted to attain a better life for my kids and I. I went to school for many years and use government assistance to help out with food and housing. I was three semesters away from graduated college and had my third child which led me to sit out for a semester before I graduated, I was so determined to obtain a degree to provide a better living for us. So, once I went back, I graduated with a Bachelor Art in Management – Healthcare Administration, I got married to my youngest son father after I graduated. I had been researching on home care agencies because healthcare was/ is my passion. I have over 20 years of service in the healthcare field. I opened up a Home Healthcare Agency called Healen Handz Home Care known as Consumer Directed Services (CDS) in 2013 and it has been successfully thriving since then. I opened up another agency Healen Handz In- Home Care in 2019 and been operating it as well. Both of the businesses is under the same umbrella. Years later, we decided to open up a uniform store in 2021 to piggy back off of the Home Healthcare Agencies and also because our employees work in scrubs for sanitary reasons. They work in the medical field and sometimes they encounter bodily fluilds or blood while working. We felt that the scrub store known as Healen Handz Scrubs & More goes hand and hand with the home healthcare agencies. We have been trying to expand our store to Atlanta because the healthcare industry there is massive and we believe we will thrive much better. Our goal is to obtain contracts with many healthcare facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, dental offices , and doctor offices just to name a few.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but i know in due time we will aquire the contracts we’re trying to obtain, which is our ultimate goal! Some struggles we have had was some facilities not wanting to pay the price for our uniforms. And also aquiring contracts.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I own 2 Home Healthcare Agencies also. The first one I opened in 2013. The second one I opened in 2019. I’m proud of myself because I was a teenage mother and beat the stigma about teen moms. What set me apart is I’m willing to do the work to become a better me and also my motto “from teenage mom to a million dollar mindset. My mindset is different and authentic. I believe that I’m not finished with me and I don’t believe in being boxed in.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have had a taste of both good luck and bad luck! I’ve experience trauma of losing my older sister and nephew from a murder suicide in 2006 which my sister and I found them unalive in their house, which played a role in me also sitting out of college. I lost my oldest son in 2017 from an overdose which made me depressed. I felt like God had his hand on me and covered me in all of those situations. My good luck is that I’m still living and able to thrive since then. I owe everything to God!
