Check Out Jalen Lee’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalen Lee.

Hi Jalen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
During my undergraduate studies at Missouri State University, I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with a specialization in Photography in 2022. Following the completion of my degree, I have participated in over 30 art exhibitions, solidifying my presence within the St. Louis art community. Furthermore, I have worked as a freelance photographer for two companies on a seasonal basis, which has further enhanced my expertise and proficiency in this field. Concurrently, I have authored my first photography book titled “Black Garden,” which explores the rich tapestry of black culture through the lens of our hair. The book showcases a diverse range of hairstyles, evoking a sense of nostalgia, and presents the overarching concept of the series to the global audience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Despite the challenges I have encountered, my journey has been distinct from others. I have consistently embraced the opportunities presented to me, recognizing and appreciating the moments when I am gaining recognition and showcasing my artistic creations. I have actively engaged in networking and forging partnerships, both within the art community and beyond. Additionally, I have sought guidance from others while simultaneously providing the same level of support and mentorship to aspiring artists who seek my guidance. Lastly, I am committed to continuously learning and growing, striving to become a renowned artist within the photography community in St. Louis.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is Jalen B. Lee and I’m a photographer/graphic designer based in St. Louis, Missouri, whose work explores traditional photography, street photography, and documentary practices. My work is rooted in observation and authenticity, focusing on candid and emotional moments that naturally emerge from everyday life. Through documentary and street photography, I capture spontaneous interactions, subtle expressions, and quiet moments that often go unnoticed. I’m drawn to the honesty found in unscripted scenes and seeks to preserve them as visual narratives that reflect the complexity of lived experience. My images often explore themes of identity, presence, and connection, emphasizing the emotional weight carried within ordinary moments. My practice is driven by a desire to create meaningful connections between the viewer and the subject. I believe that each person perceives the world differently, shaped by their background, environment, and experiences. Through the lens, I invite the audiences to step into my perspective, encouraging them to relate to my portrayal of daily life and reflect on the shared humanity behind each image. By documenting these moments, I aim to reveal the complete narrative behind the portrait and figure, offering viewers an intimate look at the world as I sees it. My greatest pride lies in my unique perspective on the world and my ability to continually surprise with my creations. I proudly present a variety of perspectives on our daily surroundings, aiming to open the eyes of my audience each time. What truly sets me apart is my open-minded approach as a photographer; I do not limit myself to a single style. I excel in street photography, portraiture, studio work, documentary photography, and more. I am dedicated to mastering each style to become the best photographer I can be.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
The pursuit of luck has been a challenging journey for me. My primary objective has been to actively engage in various art show opportunities to position myself for recognition as a renowned artist. This includes presenting my work at numerous exhibitions, collaborating with a photography company to enhance my skills, and actively networking to gain exposure. Additionally, I aspire to become a mentor to aspiring artists within the city, sharing my experiences and knowledge. Ultimately, my goal is to cultivate a mindset of continuous improvement and adaptability, striving to achieve my dreams and aspirations of becoming a globally recognized artist.
