Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Bennett.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My career has never followed a traditional path, and I think that’s what has made it so rewarding.
I began my undergraduate studies at Missouri State University, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Movement Science. While I loved sports, I eventually realized my passion wasn’t on the training or coaching side—it was in telling the stories that bring sports to life. That realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in Sports Journalism and Strategic Communication at the University of Missouri, one of the nation’s top journalism schools.
At Missouri, I immersed myself in every opportunity available. I worked in athletic communications, covered Division I athletics as a team reporter, served as a graduate teaching assistant for the Columbia Missourian sports desk, assisted ESPN and the SEC Network with live broadcasts, and gained hands-on experience in every facet of sports media. My master’s thesis examined how collegiate athletes could use social media to build their personal brands and amplify their voices—a topic that has become increasingly relevant in today’s NIL era.
After graduate school, I continued building experience across nearly every corner of the sports media industry. I worked with organizations including the Kansas City Royals, FOX Sports, FanDuel Sports Network, Stadium Network, and KC Sports Network, developing skills as an on-camera reporter, producer, writer, interviewer, and digital content creator. Covering everything from MLB Spring Training and Winter Meetings to the NFL Draft and international football games taught me how to work quickly, adapt to breaking news, and connect with audiences across multiple platforms.
One of the defining moments of my career came when I joined Advocates for Minor Leaguers. As the organization worked to unionize Minor League Baseball players, I managed digital communications and social media during one of the most significant labor movements in professional sports. Watching thousands of players organize and ultimately secure representation through the Major League Baseball Players Association was an experience that extended far beyond sports. It demonstrated the power of storytelling, communication, and advocacy to create meaningful change.
Following the successful unionization effort, I joined the MLB Players Association as a Digital Media Manager. In that role, I traveled to ballparks across the country, interviewed Major and Minor League players, developed original digital content, hosted the red carpet at the 2023 Playmakers Charity Event, and built relationships with more than 5,000 Minor League players and 1,200 Major League players. It gave me a unique perspective on the human side of professional sports and reinforced my passion for telling stories that go beyond the final score.
Over the past several years, I’ve increasingly built my career as an independent freelance journalist and on-air personality. Rather than relying on one newsroom or employer, I’ve created opportunities by working with multiple outlets simultaneously, including VSiN, Foul Territory, The Nest ATL, FanDuel Sports Network, and other national sports platforms. As a freelancer, I’ve learned that every assignment has to be earned. I’ve pitched stories, developed my own content strategy, produced videos, reported breaking news, traveled internationally to cover major sporting events, and built an engaged audience across social media by consistently delivering timely, credible, and entertaining coverage.
Freelancing has required me to become more than just a reporter. On any given day, I’m a journalist, producer, video editor, social media strategist, and entrepreneur managing my own brand. That independence has pushed me to continuously evolve with the changing media landscape while maintaining the journalistic standards that first inspired me to pursue this career.
At the heart of everything I do is a passion for storytelling. Whether I’m interviewing a Major League Baseball player, reporting from an NFL event overseas, covering breaking news, or highlighting an athlete’s journey away from the field, my goal is always the same: to tell stories that inform, connect, and resonate with audiences.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many people in sports media, one of my biggest challenges has been navigating an incredibly competitive industry where opportunities are often limited and careers rarely follow a straight path. Many of my positions have been freelance or contract-based, which has required me to constantly adapt, build new relationships, and create opportunities for myself.
Rather than viewing those challenges as setbacks, I’ve used them to diversify my skill set. I’ve learned how to report, host, produce, edit video, manage social media, conduct interviews, and create content that resonates with audiences. Wearing multiple hats has made me a more versatile journalist and prepared me for the evolving demands of modern media.
Another challenge has been establishing myself in an industry where visibility and credibility take years to build. I’ve invested significant time in networking, consistently producing quality work, and growing my own audience while continuing to pursue opportunities at the national level.
Those experiences have reinforced the importance of resilience. Every role, whether covering a youth baseball tournament or interviewing Major League players, has contributed to the journalist I am today. I’ve learned that success in this industry isn’t about one breakthrough moment—it’s about consistently showing up, continuing to improve, and being ready when the next opportunity comes along.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Throughout my career, I’ve specialized in telling stories at the intersection of sports, media, and digital content. I’m an on-air sports reporter, multimedia journalist, and content creator who has worked across television, digital publishing, social media, and live event coverage. Whether I’m reporting from MLB Spring Training, covering the NFL internationally, interviewing professional athletes, or producing social-first content, my focus is always on making stories informative, engaging, and accessible to fans.
I think what I’m best known for is my versatility. I’ve never been someone who fits into a single role. Throughout my career I’ve been an on-camera reporter, writer, producer, video editor, social media strategist, and digital content creator—often all at once. That ability to adapt has allowed me to work with organizations including FanDuel Sports Network, the MLB Players Association, FOX Sports, Stadium Network, KC Sports Network, and several independent media outlets while also building my own audience as a freelance journalist.
One accomplishment I’m especially proud of was being part of the movement to unionize Minor League Baseball players. Working with Advocates for Minor Leaguers and later the MLB Players Association allowed me to contribute to one of the most significant changes in professional baseball in decades. It reinforced my belief that journalism and communication can do more than inform—they can help amplify voices and support meaningful change.
I’m also proud of building an independent freelance career in an industry where stability is never guaranteed. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come to me, I’ve created them by pitching stories, developing partnerships, traveling to cover major events, and growing my own platform. That entrepreneurial mindset has taught me to be resourceful, self-motivated, and comfortable taking ownership of every aspect of the storytelling process.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine traditional journalism with modern digital media. I understand how to break news, conduct interviews, and tell compelling stories, but I also know how audiences consume content today. I think about storytelling through the lens of television, social media, video, and digital publishing simultaneously. That combination allows me to connect with audiences wherever they are while staying true to the principles of accurate, thoughtful journalism.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
If I had to choose one quality that has contributed most to my success, it would be persistence, supported by resilience.
The sports media industry is highly competitive, and careers rarely follow a straight path. Throughout my journey, I’ve worked contract positions, freelance assignments, and full-time roles while continuously pursuing opportunities to grow. Rather than waiting for the perfect opportunity, I’ve built my own path—pitching stories, expanding my network, creating content independently, and saying yes to experiences that challenged me and helped me develop as a journalist.
Persistence has kept me focused on my long-term goal, while resilience has allowed me to adapt when plans changed or opportunities didn’t work out as expected. Every challenge has pushed me to become a more versatile storyteller, learning new skills in reporting, digital media, video production, audience development, and on-camera hosting.
I’ve learned that success in this industry isn’t defined by one job or one opportunity—it’s built through consistently showing up, continuing to improve, and staying committed to your craft even when the path isn’t always clear. That combination of persistence and resilience has shaped both my career and the journalist I’ve become.
