Hi Cindy , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I actually got into permanent makeup because I loved making people feel good about themselves. After working in the beauty industry for over 20 years, I wanted to offer something that would make a difference every single day—not just until the next appointment. Permanent makeup was the perfect fit because it blends art, precision, and confidence all into one. I became obsessed with learning everything I could, invested heavily in continuing education, and eventually opened Shaded Permanent Cosmetics. Today, my favorite part of my job is seeing the confidence my clients gain when they realize they can wake up every morning already feeling put together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own business was both exciting and intimidating. There were times I questioned myself, especially in the beginning when I was trying to build a client base and establish my reputation. Every dollar I made went right back into education, better equipment, and improving my business. There were long days, sacrifices, and plenty of trial and error, but the hardest part was the time I had to spend away from my kids while I worked to build my dream. Missing family moments was never easy, but I knew I was creating something that would ultimately provide a better future for them and show them the value of hard work and perseverance. Looking back, I wouldn’t change the journey because it taught me resilience and shaped me into the artist, business owner, and person I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I really love what I do because it’s the perfect mix of creativity and helping people feel better about themselves. I specialize in permanent makeup such as nano brows, powder brows, specialty eyeliner and lip blushing, but at the end of the day it’s really about confidence. I get to help people wake up every morning feeling like the best version of themselves, and that’s pretty amazing.
I think what sets me apart is that I truly care. I take my time, I listen, and I want every client to leave feeling excited about their results. I’m always taking classes and learning new techniques because I never want to stop getting better.
I’m also a perfectionist. I won’t put anything on someone’s face that I wouldn’t be proud to wear myself. If I’m not happy with something, I’ll keep working until I am. My name is attached to every client that walks out of my studio, and that means a lot to me.
More than anything, I’m proud of the trust my clients have in me. There are so many talented artists out there, so the fact that people choose me, recommend me to their friends and family, and come back year after year means everything. That’s honestly what I’m most proud of.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve been self-employed for over 20 years, so taking a chance on myself wasn’t new. The difference this time was that I wasn’t 19 years old living at home building my hair business. I was a wife and a mom of three, and I had a family depending on me.
Opening my own permanent makeup studio and signing the lease on a space that was 100% my responsibility was definitely scary. It was a big financial commitment, and there were moments where I questioned if I was making the right decision. But I believed in myself, I believed in what I was building, and I had incredible support from my husband. Knowing he believed in me gave me the confidence to take that next step, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
I think the biggest rewards usually come from the risks that scare you a little. For me, this one has been worth every bit of it.
