Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Stahlschmidt.
Hi Gabrielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Like many small businesses, Gabrielle Studio of Music didn’t begin with a grand business plan; it began with a passion for helping people. I started teaching voice lessons over 12 years ago because I believed every singer deserved to feel seen, supported, and equipped with healthy, functional technique.
As the studio grew, so did my vision. I continued my education in music, vocal science, and the psychology of learning, always asking how I could become a better teacher and help my students learn more effectively. That curiosity shaped the approach I use today, one that combines evidence-based vocal training with creativity, encouragement, and a deep understanding that every singer learns differently.
What started as one teacher working with a handful of students has grown into a thriving studio community, serving singers of all ages, preparing students for auditions and performances, and now supported by an incredible team of educators who share that same passion.
Looking back, I’m most proud that while so much has changed, our purpose hasn’t. Whether a student dreams of performing professionally or simply wants to sing with more confidence, my goal has always been the same: to help people discover and develop their voice in a way that empowers them both on and off the stage.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anyone who starts a business would say it’s been a completely smooth road, and I certainly wouldn’t. There have been seasons where I’ve questioned myself, worked longer hours than I probably should have, and learned plenty of lessons by trial and error.
In the beginning, I was doing everything myself; teaching lessons, answering emails, scheduling students, keeping up with bookkeeping, marketing the studio, and trying to make sure every student and family felt known. It was a lot to balance, but I cared deeply about building something people could trust, so every part of it mattered to me.
As the studio has grown, so has my role. What started as just me has become a team of people who genuinely care about our students, and that’s been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. It’s allowed us to welcome more students without losing the personal, relationship-centered approach that has always been important to me.
Looking back, every challenge taught me something. They pushed me to become a better teacher, a better business owner, and a better leader. Building this studio has stretched me in ways I never expected, but it’s also been one of the greatest joys of my life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the heart of what I do is helping people find confidence in their own voice. While I teach healthy vocal technique and work with singers of all ages, from beginners to college-bound performers and working artists, I’ve always believed that singing is about so much more than music. It’s about learning to trust yourself, take risks, and discover what you’re capable of.
One of the things that has shaped my teaching the most is my love for both vocal science and the psychology of learning. I’m fascinated by how the voice works, but I’m equally fascinated by how people learn, grow, and overcome the fear that so often gets in the way of expressing themselves. Every student is different, and I love getting to meet them exactly where they are. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here; every lesson is built around the individual sitting in front of me.
If there’s one thing I’m most proud of, it’s the community we’ve built. Over the years, the studio has become so much more than a place to take voice lessons. It’s become a place where students feel safe to try, to fail, to celebrate, and to grow. Watching someone walk through the door unsure of themselves and, months or years later, seeing them perform with confidence, or simply believe in themselves in a way they never have before, is the greatest privilege of my work. Those moments remind me that while I’m teaching people how to sing, what we’re really building is confidence that extends far beyond the stage.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m naturally curious, so I’m almost always learning something. Most of what I read or listen to revolves around vocal science, educational psychology, and human performance because I’m fascinated by not just how the voice works, but how people learn. Understanding the “why” behind the voice has shaped my teaching far more than chasing the latest trends or quick fixes.
Outside of work, I’ve realized that constantly working isn’t what makes me a better teacher. Making time for family and friends, being outdoors, or simply stepping away from the studio gives me the perspective to return with new ideas and renewed energy. Some of the best solutions to a student’s vocal challenge have come when I wasn’t actively looking for them.
I think curiosity is one of the greatest gifts a teacher can have. The more I learn, the more I realize there’s always something new to discover, and that’s part of what keeps me excited to walk into the studio every day.
