Today we’d like to introduce you to Latosha Clark.
Hi Latosha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I first learned to crochet when I was about 15 years old. It started as a creative hobby where I made scarves and blankets for myself, my family, and my friends. As I got older, people began asking if they could purchase my handmade pieces, and by my mid-20s I was selling the items I crocheted.
When I first started my business, it was called Nerdy Crochets by Latosha. My sister and brother helped me come up with the name because crochet was my primary focus at the time.
In 2019, everything changed when I got my Cricut Maker. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a passion as I explored all the different things I could create. Before long, I realized my business had grown beyond crochet, and the name no longer reflected everything I was making. A coworker suggested replacing “Crochets” with “Creations,” and that’s how Nerdy Creations by Latosha was born.
Today, my business is a reflection of my creativity and my love for making personalized, handcrafted items that bring people joy. Looking back, it’s incredible to see how something that began with a crochet hook at 15 years old has evolved into a business that continues to grow and inspire me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. Like many small business owners, I’m still learning what it takes to run a successful business and how important it is to stay consistent.
One of my biggest lessons came early on when I was crocheting. There were times when I would spend hours making custom orders, only for customers to never pay or pick them up. It was discouraging, but it taught me the importance of valuing my time and my work. That’s one of the reasons I now require deposits for custom orders.
Not every challenge has been a negative one, though. Some of my favorite “struggles” are when customers ask if I can create something I’ve never made before. My first instinct is usually, “I’ll figure it out!” Those opportunities push me to learn new skills, think creatively, and grow as a maker. There’s nothing more rewarding than successfully creating something I once thought was outside my comfort zone.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creating personalized, handcrafted items. While crochet is where my creative journey began—and it’s still something I enjoy—I also create custom apparel, home décor, decals, and a variety of personalized keepsakes.
One of my most popular items is my custom baby boxes. They’re the item I receive the most orders for, and I love being able to create something meaningful for families as they welcome a new baby.
I’m proud of every piece I make, but I’m especially proud of the projects that challenge me. Some of my favorite creations have come from customers asking, “can you make this?” even when I’ve never made it before. Those opportunities push me to learn, grow, and expand my skills.
I think what sets me apart is my willingness to take on new challenges and my attention to detail. I don’t like creating something that feels generic—I want each piece to reflect the person it’s made for. I put a lot of care into making sure every custom order is something my customers will be excited to receive and proud to share.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is about growth. It’s knowing that I’m continuously learning, improving my skills, and creating work that I’m proud of. Of course, growing my business is important, but success isn’t measured only by sales.
Success is when a customer trusts me with their vision, and I’m able to create something that brings them joy. It’s when someone comes back for another order or recommends my business to someone else. Those moments remind me that the time, effort, and care I put into my work truly matter.
As long as I’m continuing to grow creatively, challenge myself, and make a positive impact through what I create, I’ll consider that success.
