Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Hendricks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Hendricks.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my hair journey August of 2019 when I officially started at Paul Mitchell STL. After 10 months of schooling and a few months of job hunting, I landed at an independent salon in my hometown of Bethalto Illinois, The Islands Salon and Spa, and have been there since October 2020.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning it was definitely tricky. All I knew was I had a passion for all things hair: color theory, hair cutting techniques, product knowledge, and the hope of building a clientele who would allow me to change their hair for the best. All I ever wanted to do was make people feel as good and their hair looked, and I’m so happy to say I’ve been able to achieve that over the years. I love that I get to share my passion with my clients and they love what I do and what I can do for them. That doesn’t go without saying I had some hard times, dealing with tricky clients and hairy situations (pun intended), but sometimes you need to stick it through uncomfortable situations to learn and grow. Allowing myself to challenge my talent hasn’t hindered my ability to do hair, it has only grown my knowledge and passion even further to tackle bigger things within our industry. What started as a simple interest in highlights and hair color, has opened doors for me to give my clients their dream hair they never could’ve imagined obtaining with the world of custom extensions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Independent Hairdresser in Bethalto, Illinois STL Metro East. I mainly specialize in lived in color- blondes, brunettes, and vivid hair color. I also love extension services, and provide custom installs with micro wefts, keratin tips, and soon hair toppers. My goal with all of my clients is to be able to give them the hair of their dreams while still keeping it easy and low maintenance for at home care. Before I went to cosmetology school, I was your typical wash-and-go girl, so I know how it is! I try to make the homework as easy as my clients want it, while still keeping it reasonable. Some of my proudest moments have been when my clients message me after our sessions letting me know how much more happy and confident they feel with themselves after they get their new hair. A great hairstyle is a true make or break for most people (trust me, been there done that with terrible hair), and I just want everyone to be their most confident self!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
A small portion of my clientele knows this, but I am a gamer! My husband started Fusion 314, and got me into PC gaming when we first started dating. It’s been one of my favorite hobbies ever since. I don’t play anything too hardcore, my wrists can only handle so much between cutting hair and my keyboard! But, I would say my guilt pleasure is definitely Fortnite and The Sims 4, but I also love games that involve more immersive worlds like Arc Raiders, Hogwarts legacy, and hopefully soon to play Fable 4 and Elflock. Especially in the colder months, it’s great to have something to come home to enjoy with my friends and my husband that we can all connect with.
