Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Cobb.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in my family’s restaurant gave me a front-row seat to what it truly means to run a business. Beyond seeing the hard work and independence that comes with being your own boss, I saw the power of hospitality. Time and time again, I watched guests turn into regulars, and regulars turn into friends. My family set an incredible example of how to treat people, not just by serving delicious food, but by showing up with warm hearts and a helping hand whenever someone was in need.
That environment taught me that real impact starts at the local level. I realized that if you want to see positive change, you have to build it with and for your community. Driven by that passion, I looked for a genuine need, and took the leap to start my own journey. From those early days to where I am today, that core mission hasn’t changed: bringing people together, serving something made with heart, and investing right back into the community that supports me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? As a small business owner, I’m not sure I even know what a ‘smooth road’ looks like. It’s more like a winding path that turns into a roller coaster day after day.
Just a year after opening Sweet EM’s, COVID hit, and we had to shut our doors for a full month. That was terrifying. As new parents who put our house on the line for this dream, we genuinely didn’t know what was going to happen. But we used that month to re-evaluate everything, to figure out what really mattered and what could wait.
Taking that step back gave us a whole new perspective on the crazy ride of life. Challenges are guaranteed, but at the end of the day, we have a roof over our heads, and our family is safe and healthy. Whenever things look grim, coming back to that core truth is what pulls us through.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Sweet EM’s and Sugaree, we specialize in handcrafted, high-quality baked goods made with real heart and tradition. But if you ask me what I’m most proud of, it isn’t just what comes out of the oven, it’s the journey and the people I get to build this with every single day.
Starting out as a home baker, I never take for granted the opportunity to work alongside such genuinely talented people who teach me something new every day. Many on our team are either stepping into their very first job or starting out as home bakers themselves, just like I did. That brings a level of passion to our kitchens that simply can’t be taught.
What sets us apart is watching our team grow, whether that’s learning how to lead and manage a crew full of teens or quietly honing their craft to be the absolute best at what they do. I’m endlessly grateful to stand next to them, bake alongside them, and learn from them every single day.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resilience paired with adaptability. Running a small business means navigating continuous unexpected shifts, from sudden closures to rapid growth and being able to stay grounded while pivoting is everything. Holding fast to what truly matters keeps you steady through the high-stakes moments, while remaining open to learning from every challenge (and every team member) allows you to keep moving forward.
