Hi Kathy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Square Dancing – the best kept secret for having fun! If you are looking for a way to enrich your life, gain wonderful new friends, challenge your mind a bit, and at the same time get some exercise, all very economically, try square dancing! It’s fun for all ages and for both couples and singles. 17 years ago I was looking for something that my husband and I could do together that would get us active rather than spending evenings sitting on the couch watching TV. I talked my husband into going to lessons, and after just one night we were both hooked. In fact he was even more hooked than I was. So after just a few years he became a square dance caller. Now we teach square dancing lessons for two of the half dozen square dance clubs in the St. Louis area. We would love to have you join us! The first night is free and you are not obligated to continue so you have no excuse for not trying! All of the clubs are non-profit, just charging enough to cover expenses.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There really are just a couple of things that keep square dancing from being as popular as we would like it to be. One is getting the word out; it just doesn’t get the publicity that pickle ball gets! The other is that it does take some commitment. To dance at a regular square dance club dance you have to complete a set of lessons, which is usually taught once a week for 16 to 20 weeks. The calls that you learn build upon one another and even though we always review the calls from the week before, you don’t want to be missing class very much.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The thing that sets the square dance calling and teaching apart from other professions is that callers are not in this for the money. They do it because they enjoy it, and they see the dancers enjoying it. My husband said when he started calling that if it ever becomes not fun for him, that then it would be time to stop. Square dancing is infectious. When the caller is having fun, you know that the dancers are having fun also.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Actually I remember square dancing in grade school and at 4-H functions and enjoying it. However, the square dancing we do now is not like the “olden” days. It is much better!
