Life & Work with Tylain King of St Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tylain King.

Hi Tylain, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
March 10th 2021, was the first time I went live on Twitch and the first time I committed to becoming a streamer/content creator. During 2020, the year of COVID, I used to watch my friends who were livestreamers at the time, and honestly, I was hesitant to even join that environment. Shoutout to my friend John for giving me the encouragement to just go for it. He told me that it seems like I have the personality and the potential to be a streamer. During that time, I was an outgoing person, but being an online entertainer did not come to mind.

So towards the end of the year 2020, going into 2021, I was working on my first gaming setup/space. I had a job during COVID, and I used that income to invest in my equipment. I was also starting college and was an online student due to COVID, so my freshman year was entirely online, and in my free time I streamed on Twitch. Now It’s 2026, and I have been doing this for 5 years. I’m glad I stayed motivated to continue doing this even throughout my college years.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road whatsoever; I started in the early stages of COVID, and while balancing college, I had my ups and downs. I didn’t want to start something while I was an online student and then, all of a sudden, drop streaming because I became an on-campus student. Later in 2021, I was able to live on campus and start my sophomore year on a high note. I even had my mini setup with me so I could stream, and trust me, college Wi-Fi isn’t the best, but I made it work. Also, my roommate at the time was my best friend, so she supported my passion for content creation. I never lost the balance between content creation and school until Junior year of college.

My junior year of college was the hardest year of my college experience, but towards the end of it I found myself closer to God. I was always a believer, growing up in the church, especially with my grandparents, being a part of the church board, and going through religious schools all my life, so with college being much broader and having some independence, I felt like I wanted to experience new things. So Junior year started on a low note: my campus apartment room got flooded and wasn’t going to be done in time to move in, so my best friend and I had to stay in a off campus apartment and at that time I wasn’t driving, so my bestfriend dropped me off at classes and such also not to mention this was my first time staying with a third roommate I wasn’t as close with but she was cool. As time went on, I managed content creation while being considerate of my other roommate. My mom wasn’t in agreement with me moving to the off-campus apartment, but commuting from home was a lot, and for a little while there was some tension between us over this decision. This is where the turning point happened for me in my life.

A weekend around February, I had to travel to Tennessee for the funeral of one of my great-aunts I didn’t really hang around with; that’s the hard thing about extended family. I love family, but I hardly knew my great aunt, so going to her funeral felt weird to me at the time. I was praying that I could handle it, and my mindset was to go down to Tennessee with the family, get through the funeral, and get back to campus and back to my content creation. On Monday, I returned to campus, going about my day, then I noticed my mom hadn’t texted me at all to check in with me… from then on, I knew something was off. I texted her, and she told me, “Your cousin isn’t doing too well.” My chest got tight in the moment, and I asked her, “Which cousin?” This was one of my closest cousins on my mom’s side who always showed up to family functions and events. She was in the hospital, and I told my mom to please keep me updated.

I leaned on substances that night to help relieve any anxiety I was feeling while I was waiting for an update from my mom, but I got a call at 11:00 p.m. that night, and my mom told me, “She didn’t make it.” I immediately went numb. My best friend checked in on me and asked for any updates. Everything I was feeling was gone, and I hardly slept that night. I just got back from a funeral, and now I have to attend another one soon with someone I was closer to. I started to struggle with content creation, school, my faith, and myself. I had to do something, and my best friend and I had a talk; she suggested that we deepen our relationship with God. I liked the idea, especially with what I’m going through at this time. We started to do bible studies together, attend churches, and even went to Christian artist concerts in the area. I felt like this was genuinely the starting point for bringing me closer to God, and I can truly say I feel firm in my walk with Christ.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I am a Content creator/streamer over on Twitch. I am known for playing video games, building community through my chat, and reacting on Twitch and YouTube. I am proud to say that I have made many achievements in this field of content creation, including streaming at conventions like MomoCon Atlanta in both the year of 2025 and 2026. I feel that my personality and how I am my authentic self, no matter who is in the room with me, sets me apart. I love who I am when the cameras are on or off.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I feel like risk-taking should be done. I take risks when it comes to networking with other companies or people who may have a bigger audience than me. I heard a phrase once that said something like, “You are 100% guaranteed to miss the shots you don’t take.” We aren’t perfect, and sometimes those risks could open up a chance for you to show people what you are made of and what your work is about.
