Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Mack.
Hi Tracey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is one of evolution. I began designing and sewing my own bow ties. From there I began designing and sewing “teacher” totes bags and small makeup-types bags using cotton fabrics and mostly African prints. My current passion is repurposing wooden cigar boxes into purses. One day I saw a lady in church with one and the creative thoughts began churning. My current designs feature women standing in front on famous/tourist locations. My goal is to work with local artists to create some authentic images for the purses.
I have also repurposed some cigar boxes into clocks.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The challenges I face currently is inventory. I’m only using a certain type/kind of cigar box. I’m also having trouble sourcing the hardware I need for the designs I make. To help keep each purse authentic I will use various colors for the handles. Supplies have been limited. I don’t have completed inventory on hand, because they are personalized purses and sold as soon as they are completed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
This is a niche market for me. First of all, many are surprised when they hear I am a man creating for women. Many of my sales have been to “church” ladies that have told their friends about me. I work alone and do not mass produce the designs that are on the purses. I carefully match the handles with the hardware and choose the bling that compliments the image.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve not yet found a mentor in this area. This is not a specialized area, so I’m willing to teach others the craft with hope they can be very successful.
