Today we’d like to introduce you to JA TheSongod.
Hi JA, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m JATheSongod — rapper, singer, actor, and poet out of North City, St. Louis. Music has always been how I process life: the pain, the faith, the love, the grind. My first project was Avert Your Eyes, where I found my voice and learned I wasn’t just making songs, I was telling the truth in rhythm. From there I built everything independently — my own publishing, SONGOD ENT, my own merch — and in 2024 I dropped my album SONKISS’D, the project that really introduced the world to who I am. Since then it’s been single after single — “Level UP,” “GoGeta,” “Bikini Bottom,” “Last Call,” “Rated R,” and my latest, “Drugs.” My new single “K.O.” lands October 23. By day I also help first-time car buyers get on the road as Mr. First Time Buyer — same mission, different stage: helping my people level up. My motto says it all: Not The Most High, But I’m The Close High.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been smooth at all. Everything you hear is self-funded and independent — no label, no machine, just me believing in the gift enough to pay for it over and over. The hardest lessons weren’t even about music, they were about the business: I recently learned my songs had never been properly registered to pay me what they’re owed, and I’m in the process of fixing that now so the work I’ve already done can finally work for me. And honestly, a lot of my records come from real pain — “Drugs” is me saying the quiet part out loud about masking hurt instead of healing from it. The struggle is the material. I just decided a long time ago that quitting wasn’t one of my options.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a recording artist who treats every song like a world. I specialize in concept records — “Bikini Bottom” is me chasing the one I want like Plankton chasing the secret formula, “Level UP” turns the grind into a video game, “Rated R” is a whole movie in a song. What I’m known for is honesty: love songs that are actually romantic, pain songs that don’t flinch, and faith woven through all of it. What I’m most proud of is SONKISS’D and the fact that I built this brick by brick — my own catalog, my own publishing company, my own merch store — without waiting on anybody’s permission. What sets me apart is that there’s no character to keep up. JATheSongod is who I am when the mic is off, too.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Creating makes me happy — that moment a line lands exactly the way it felt in my chest. Family makes me happy; I come from people who stood for something, and carrying that name forward matters to me. My faith keeps me grounded and grateful. And it makes me happy when somebody tells me a song of mine got them through something — especially the records I wrote from my own lowest places. If my pain can become somebody else’s push, then none of it was wasted.
